OTC Criteria?

Hey guys,

New elk hunter here that will be going to give it a shot this year, OTC 3rd rifle Colorado.

I am wanting to camp at the truck vs backpack in. Are all OTC units available to do this in? Or are there certain units that allow camping from the truck and some that don't.

What about the criteria to basecamp? For the guys that camp at the truck that have been doing so for some time, what do yall look for in terms of access? And is it really just as easy as driving into the unit, picking a spot off the road and just setting up camp?

Thank you guys, any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Calling or paying a visit to the forest service prior to your hunt could also be helpful for you. Once you've narrowed down an area just figure out what forest service ranger district it's in and look up where their office is located.

For the most part.....yes. But some areas of public land have restrictions. And obviously private is a no go without permission. Not all State Trust lands are open to hunting. And even if they are, they don't allow overnight camping or driving on those lands even if there's a 2-track there. You've always got to know where you are, what lands you're on, and what rules and restrictions each has.

Read the regulations for the area you are interested in and go camping before you go hunting. Good luck.
