I’m going to Portland oregon for a week in late July. I’ll have a few days with nothing to do and was hoping to get in some fishing and camping while I was there, specifically steelhead as it looks like I’ll be there maybe at the start of the run. I was looking at the Deschuttes river below Sherars. It looks like besides just fishing license I’ll need a day use permit. I guess my question is, is this going to be worth it one, will there be steelhead there at that time or should I look somewhere else?

There could be some fish around but it might be a tad early. But, be warned, that canyon in late July can be brutally hot.

You can rest assured that somewhere close to Portland in late July there will be some steelhead around. Finding them and getting them to bite might be another thing... You might also try coastal rivers or stuff on the Washington side as well. Many have summer runs that should have some fish kicking around.

The Columbia might still be going then. There’s some guides who specialize in it.

Other option would be to go on a dory trip out of pacific city, that’d be my choice, ocean coho might be open then as well.

Yep, early on the Deschutes. July can be tough in the heat but the Clackamas and Sandy have summer fish.

I second the dory trip out of pacific city, unique experience and fish will be caught.

dm me if you’d like, i’m a fishing guide on the lower columbia. all the tribs down here should have plenty of fish for you around then.

I would get a jet boat guide on the Deschutes. The walk in is crowded and you can buzz from spot to spot on the sled. Sam Sickles of Steelhead outfitters is who id call. If he's booked he will give you the names of other good guides.
Todd Harris is awesome but I don't think he's there til August

Be warned...the Deschutes is addicting and you'll want to come back.

Also get felt soles with studs and a wading staff. There's a high probability you fall in...I call it getting baptized by the D

Thanks for the advice. I’ll call a couple of the guides and see what they say. I really just want to get on some fish during my down time.

Could also look up travis johnson of all waters angling or nate turner with skookum. They just do float trips which may be good if it's a day jet boats aren't allowed to run

As others said, a tad bit early. But if you find them, you find them. Only one way to find out with steelhead!
