I have an old Leupold Mk4 that's MOA and Mil dots that I got before MIL turrets and FFP was a thing. I hate that the reticle is useless for holding unless I'm at max zoom, which I almost never am. I got my first FFP scope in 2010 and I'll never go back.

I sure wish that you could find a FFP scope that isn't pushing 2 lbs though.
When you say mil dot, is the reticle actually in milliradians while the turrets are moa??

Yes. I bought it that way because that’s how I was taught long range marksmanship in the Army. No idea if Leupold was offering mil turrets back in 2005 when I bought it. No zero stop either, we took a slice of copper pipe and some sandpaper until it was juuustt right.

Your spotter would give you holds in mil’s, but if you wanted to dial you had to multiply the mils by 3.4 (3.5 in practice) to get the right turret adjustment. Typically you held. Good times. Needless to say when FFP, MIL turrets and Xmas tree reticles came out it was like living in the year 3000.

That’s nuts. I don’t get why someone would’ve ever thought having mixed measurements was a good idea. Luckily I don’t think I’ve seen anyone who still makes stuff that way.

Somewhere I saw a description of life in the Army as being ordered to eat tomato soup with a fork and I’ll be damned if I can’t think of a better analogy for a lot of military life.

As I understand it, scopes were originally made for adjustments in inches per 100 yards, which is basically an MOA. Mils are used for ranging. I still have a set of binos that I was issued overseas that have a mil reticle in them. So reticles were mil and turrets were MOA. Theres probably someone who’s much better versed in firearms history that could probably correct me though.

There are several scopes that are well under 2# and FFP.

Vortex LHT
SWFA 3-15
Trijicon TenMile
Maven RS 1.2

3 of those 4 have shown to be very durable and repeatable as well.

Thanks for the pointers.

I looked at the LHT, but according to the Vortex website it’s SFP.

It’s a bummer because it’s listed as being 19 oz, which is where I’d like to be.

I had a kahles 525 on my prs rig. I don’t think I ever got it above 15-18x shooting out to 1100 in a match. You really don’t need a ton of zoom to reach out there.

For your hunting at 300 yards I’d be comfortable with a 10x on the top end, but if you want to use the same scope for targets at 1000 then new maven rs1.2 2.5-15 would work great for your application in my opinion.
I second this - the most important portion of this is clarity at the higher magnifications...whether you shoot at 15 or 20 or 28, if you cannot clearly see the target and make wind calls based on what you see in the environment, having a scope that goes up that high and isn't clear, is moot.

Fan of Kahles - which uses top end swaro glass
Fan of NF just not the NX 8 at anything above 24x - have two friends that have them and that is their chief complaint

May wanna get one that starts at 4x if all you are going to do is hunt out to 300 - but my bet is you stretch that as you become more and more proficient at LR targets.
