This year has been optic upgrade year. The question centers around my new spotting scope, a Swarovski STS 80. It's now time to upgrade the tripod set up and have that narrowed down to either a slik 624cf or a promaster 525c. Both have their benefits and and down falls. The weight of the slik is great and how compact it is but it doesn't expand to standing height. The promaster is light but slightly heavier but does expand to standing height. In my 20 years of hunting, I have never once stood behind a tripod and spotter so will I start now? My actual question though is, I'm going with an outdoorsman pan head and am debating the pan head versus the micro pan head...will a micro handle an sts 80? I'd like to save those ounces again if possible.

Yes the micro will handle it, I have the ats 80, silk 624 and micro. The micro does just fine.

I'm in the middle of this debate as well - interested to hear some opinions between the two tripods, I'm leaning promaster for versatility but it would be nice to save $50 if the slik is the way to go.

I just went through this exact same thing and ended up going with the Slik 624 and have zero regrets. For the extra money and weight I don't think the promaster is worth the tiny probability I'd ever glass standing up

Just a heads up, Cameraland often has demos at a discount. I saw a demo xc525c on there for $249 recently.

It's worth calling camera land up, they will do what they can to help Roksliders. I got my new, not demo Promaster from them for $220 shipped. Not saying they can do that without a sale at the moment but talk to them and then can usually hook you up.
