I was getting ready to buy a Kimber Montana in 270 and came across the Savage 16/116 lightweight hunter. 5.6 pounds. Same as the Kimber. $600. Tupperware stock but B&C available if it's bad. Anybody shoot one? What did you think?

I'm also considering this rifle. I'm on a $1500 budget for a mountain rifle with glass and this seems to be a pretty good option from the research I've done so far. Not really been a rifle guy for a good while so I'm really out of the loop.

went with a buddy who bought one to the range, multiple times with it.... chambered in .308

nice lightweight gun, it's more finicky than most savages (i've shot) on factory ammo. His started shooting really well with Hornady superformance... everything else the groups opened up. Most other savages are lights out shooters, this one could be with the right ammo... if you reload no concerns.

apples to oranges compared to a montana though. If you're looking to save a little then buy with confidence. I personally am not crazy about clipped rifles though. The blind mag on kimbers is invaluable. If I had a small budget though this gun would fit the bill.....

backcountry_hunter - is the blind mag more reliable? What is the issue with the magazine?

One less thing to go wrong. You know you always have rounds in the rifle. Carrying a clip I'm always checking to make sure a branch didn't trip and release it. But if you truck/day hunt a lot then a clip might be more convenient... for my extended trips I'm able to load and leave it.

Makes since. I guess if I end up going with this I'll need to get a spare magazine and carry it. Adds to the overall weight though.

On my tikka I'll just run a short strip of duct tape from one side to the other, holding it up incase something did happen... cheap insurance

On my Kimber.... no worries

I love mine in 6.5 CM :)

It's a shooter for sure! I found the Tupperware stock is fine on these - I have plenty of clearance and shooting from a bi-pod has no issues. Action smooths up pretty nice after shooting and cleaning a bit - maybe not tikka smooth idk, but still is great.

At least in the 6.5 - the barrel is a little slower since it is 20" - not that it matters a ton - I get 2700 with a 130 VLD and 2800 with a Barnes 127 LRX using same powder charge - which is plenty for my 4-500 yard lightweight rig.

With Factory 140 ELD-M

With Berger 130 VLD Handloads - flier was me:

I've been wanting the one rileybassman has since they came out. I have a 116 with the accustock in 300 win mag that I love. I don't really feel the accustock does much so I don't think I'd miss it on this rifle. It'd be awful hard for me to buy a Kimber Montana over this gun.

I've got a model 16 Weather Warrior in 270 WSM. I bedded the Tupperware stock and added some stiffness to it using JB Weld and threaded rod. I love the rifle, it is absolutely deadly accurate. Just a laser gun. I'd not hesitate at all to pick one of these up

Haven't shot one just handled them a couple times. They feel really cheap. Actions are rough, pencil thin barrels with excessive gaps between barrel and stock. I would take a tikka over the lwh any day.
