OnX Fail

Anyone else have their OnX app completely freeze on their last location while using the program in offline mode? This happened to me while scouting on the North Slope of the Uintas in May. I even closed the app and shut off my phone, but it automatically went back to my previous waypoint. It wasn’t until I got home and almost a week later when it finally resolved itself.

I once had this same experience with OnX app too. I couldn't figure out where the issue came from. I'll check mine again to see if it's back to normal

It’s technology, it’s going to fail occasionally. I’d say onX gives me grief about 3-4 times a year. Bear hunting in May mine froze like that. It had been in offline mode for days. I had to uninstall it, drive into town with a signal to reinstall, then it worked.

They always seem to do a huge update right at the beginning of September that’s buggy. I’ve never understood that timing.

This is a good reminder for me to always have a backup option for mapping software!

OnX is one of the buggiest apps ever. They constantly try to update and "improve" it but cause more problems. I switched to Gaia around 2021 or 2022 when I couldn't take it anymore. I still have OnX as a backup and for the better satellite imagery, but every time I open it I get a full page ad of something they are trying to sell me, and sometimes it just completely bricks up.

I don't trust any phone or GPS as my sole navigation if I'm somewhere I can't find my way out of with dead reckoning, but I ESPECIALLY don't trust the OnX app to work.

The only way I have found that offline maps don’t have any issues is to run a track constantly. I know that takes more battery and may not be a solution if running offline for days on end. But I use offline maps frequently for day hunts or scouting and never had an issue if track is recording. But as Turkeyget said it’s technology there will always be issues

I had one issue many years ago with offline maps that was fixed the next day. Other than that, it always works.
I have seen friends have issues when using an android phone but on the iphone it just works.
