Out from a elk hunt in the Lolo unit and wanted to share a report. BELIEVE everything you read about the low Elk population in there! There are a FEW elk, but in that steep, brushy, wet country they are as elusive as ghosts and have obviously learned the art of be quiet to survive! We burned a lot of boot leather and gas in the side by side. Went in heavy each day expecting to spike in if we found them. Most nights was a march back out to the trail head due to lack of sign and back into another drainage the next day. Covered LOTS of country, met some really cool guys beside our camp, but its back to the drawing boards to find another unit and kick myself for not believing some of the reports of what its like in there!
My experience left me channeling Johnny Cash...
I was totin my pack along an Idaho road when along came a truck with a camo load. They asked if there were Elk in the Lolo land and I said...
I been everywhere man, crossed the wet Alder lair man, breathed the mountain air man, of trails I've seen my share man, and there a'int no Elk in here man...
Ive been to Chamberlain Mountain, Birch Mountain, Scurvy Mountain, Blacklead Mountain, Gorman Hill, Fly Hill, Bruin Hill, Gospel Hill, Ive been every where....
I've been to Birch ridge, Osier ridge, Pollock ridge, Little Moose ridge, Goose ridge, Long creek, Short creek, Boundary creek, Rawhide creek, Swamp creek, 40 creek (see it drove me to drink), I've been everywhere
Tried locate bugle, night bugle, road bugle, low bugle, no bugle, cow calls, cold calls, I bugled over every ridge and dale and was more than once met with a lonesome howling wail...of troubles I've seen my share man but its no joke what the wolves done in there man....
