On hunting with less efficient weapons

It’s a big world out there..

Lots of dudes on this site and not on this site who treat rifle hunting more like archery and are quite capable at long range.

Sometimes out west, you cannot easily get closer and a long range shot is the only one you will get. Guys train and prepare for that kind of thing, we have a yearly completion of sorts if you want to search the Cold Bore Challenge.

I looked at that thread. The shots are impressive I'll give you that.

Is it this forums culture to answer questions with cryptic messages followed by ...? I'm not trying to be snarky, actual question. If so I'll play along and do my part.

You made a some pretty bold and definitive statements about shooting long range, and also seem to be unfamiliar with one of the major habitat types in the west (PJ=pinyon juniper).

So yes my comment is somewhat tongue in cheek. If you honestly have to ask what situation would require a shot beyond 300 yards, it calls into question your level of experience hunting western game. If you throw around judgement based on limited experience you are going to get razzed a bit around here.

I use my weapon choice as one metric in “building” the hunt experience I want. It may not always be the choice that offers me the best odds, but to me the kill isn’t the metric of fulfillment. For example, sometimes I dress vintage and take out my classic deer rifles and go tracking in the snowy woods, to gain a real understanding of how the old timers did things. I grew up reading the classic stories, so it really scratches that itch.

I would too! It was a “just sayin comment”not implying there was anything wrong with it. Or any other approach for that matter.

I talked to a guy at an event on Sunday about deer hunting. We were looking at his trad bow and he was saying 15 yards was about it for him.

He said he got no joy from "pointing" a rifle at a deer at 100 yards and pulling the trigger.

My wife simply won't let me sit in a tree that long and often. She needs results.

HAHA. Yeah my wife gets a bit annoyed at me starting Oct 28th and ending Nov 24th because "i didn't shoot anything" and doesn't understand why i'm hunting antlers in that time frame. So when I say "i passed up on X number of deer" she starts wondering why I'm out there and asking if I've lost my ability to hunt

It’s a real conundrum whether to tell your wife you’re passing small ones or just saying “didn’t see anything”. They’re going to judge you either way

I won’t lie…. I hunt with a compound because I still get the shakes and turn to jelly when I get to full draw. That has to be what heroin is like…. What ever that feeling is, I chase it. I have to battle myself doe, buck, or squirrel. It’s just different. When I hunt with a rifle that feeling just isn’t there. Getting a deer within 20 yards is an absolute puzzle that takes time and effort to solve. Getting one inside 200 yards is simple…. Aint no doubt the rifle is a meat getter though!! I still rifle hunt and like it. But the bow is an addiction.

Hmmmm... I read the term "less lethal" here in regards to weapons. Less lethal for who or what? There is no such thing. It's a made up term like "Assault Weapon" What determines "lethality" or "assault" is the one wielding the weapon and what they can do with it.

Example.. In the 1980's John Linebaugh (RIP) created the 500 Linebaugh (500L) straight walled pistol cartridge. He set out to duplicate the ballistics of the old 50-70 government black powder rifle, The one they used to wipe out the buffalo herds. Shot a 450gr at 1300fps. 500gr a little slower. The Sharps rifle was known for taking big game at long distances. John succeeded. The 500L is a wildcat made from a 348 win case shooting a 450gr cast bullet at over 1300 fps from a 5" barreled custom revolver built on a Ruger Blackhawk. I cast and load my 500L with a 455gr at 1325 fps from a 5" barrel. 540 gr at 1100. I Killed a moose with it one year. Which weapon is more" lethal"? The single shot Sharps Rifle or the 5 round pistol? Depends on the one holding it.

The 454 Casull has taken every big game animal on the planet with the right projectile. Is this pistol round "less lethal" than say a hot 45-70?

And don't forget. The original "lowly 45 Colt" shooting a 250 gr chunk of lead at 900fps was commissioned by the military and designed to take down a horse and rider. Is that "cowboy round" now considered "less lethal"?

I killed a Dall Sheep ram in my avatar pic with 454 Cassull shooting a 240gr at 1900 fps. Hit him in the chest facing me at 71ish yards. He did a back flip and hit the ground like he'd been hit with a cannon. I've killed other rams with my 325wsm 200gr accubond at 2950 fps the didn't hit the ground that quick.

The lethality lies in the hand of the one holding the weapon. A bow in my hands is nothing more than a fancy string holder. But I'm pretty lethal with my Pistols.

Pick a weapon and make it part of you. That will make you a lethal hunter. Rather that a "less lethal" one!

I have never had any interest in firearm hunting big game, do not own any rifles other than an AR and a couple.22 and rarely shoot them.

I have guided rifle hunters a lil in the west and find it pretty lame, first Elk hunt I guided we were sneaking in on a herd and my hunter was freaking out, I realized we were in range, was kind of funny, told him we were getting in as close as possible!

To each his own but I am a bow hunter.
