Anyone hunted in the old Cabelas stand hunter clothing and Sitka or other newer whitetail clothing? Some of my best rain gear was older Cabelas stuff. Was wondering whet the comparison is with the old clothing and newer clothing.
The older Cabelas stand hunter extreme bibs, jacket, or coveralls will keep you warm. It has plenty of insulation and a wind breaking layer.
The newer garments will also keep you warm, and have a wind breaking layer as well.
In using either, I strap them to the outside of my backpack, hike into my stand wearing merino base layers, then get dressed at the base of the tree. I wouldn’t wear any of these items to walk in, way too warm and bulky for that.
The biggest difference will be in the weight and bulk. The older Stand hunter extreme set was just heavier and bulkier. I used my set for many years, without issue. Spent many hours on stand and had opportunities to fill plenty of tags. Would be perfect for the right situation (not very far to walk, not hunting very often, don’t want to spend the money for the newest stuff, etc.).
If one were to hunt frequently, hike into a stand location a great distance, doesn’t mind spending the money, or want to lighten their load, it would be a good idea to go with the newer garments. But, that is kind of an individual decision.
For reference the weight difference will be about 2.5 pounds for the coveralls and roughly 3.5 pounds for the bibs and jacket set. (Comparing the stand hunter extreme coveralls, then bibs and jacket, to the Sitka fanatic set.)
Have a great season!
