I'm sure this has been asked before, but I could not find a thread that had exactly what I'm looking for.

I just purchased a browning xbolt lr off a friend of mine that is chambered in .300 win mag with a 1:8 twist barrel. He only fired the thing twice. I'm looking to start with an off the shelf round. (I don't currently reload). I have always been a Hornady guy but am open to pretty much any options here. This gun will be used for elk and mule deer out to 500 yds until I'm comfortable shooting further. (I'm comfortable with my 7 rem mag at that range currently) What suggestions would you guys have for a readily available off the shelf round for this setup?

My Tikka T3X seems to really like Federal Swift Scirocco II in 180g. They have been really consistent for me at the range.

Also own the Browning X Bolt Speed LR model. It likes the Nosler Trophy Grade 180 Grain Accubond the best. Great ammo for the ranges and species you mentioned.

The nice thing about a 300 mag is just about any 180 gr load from any manufacturer works well. It literally is that easy. In all my years I’ve never heard of anyone with bad results other than match bullets that didn’t open up at all and may have tumbled some, and I never paid attention to those guys so can’t remember what bullets those were, but they weren’t hunting bullets.

Normal $2.50/ea Federal Power-shok off the shelf at the Ranch store or hardware store have taken more elk and deer in many areas than all the others. Federal premium bonded of some sort for $4.50/ea would be my choice if you have extra cash.

What ammo did he shoot (2 times) out of the rifle? You should still have 18 left in the box. If they shoot well for you, that's a good place to start.

With a 1:8 twist rate you can shoot about as heavy as you want. Do you want a heavy high BC bullet to avoid wind drift? Or a light fast bullet so it shoots flatter? Lead free? 300 wm has tons of factory options to do what your opening question asked.

Unknown Munitions will load for you.

The price is for 50 pieces. If you buy 100 pieces of Peterson or ADG brass you can send it back and they will reload it for you. You get quality precision high performance ammunition for a little more than buying factory.

Thanks I’ll check them out
