I have spoken to a couple of outfitters today, and am struggling to select an outfit. I will have 4 points going into application for 2027. All three hunts/outfits I am mentioning are horseback wall tent which I want

Jackson hole outfitters - they seem to have a strong reputation. This would be in their Teton wilderness camp. Targeting 160-180 bucks

Trails west Josh Martoglio - everything I’ve read seems they are absolute killers and they seem to have proof. He told me they target 175ish bucks

Best of the west - I will have to point pool to hunt their G/H camp. Targeting bigger bucks but obviously the winter kill happened a few years back. Bruce was very open and honest with the situation.

I can’t really decide where and what. The cost of all 5 fluctuates a few thousand which I don’t care. Trails west hunt is sold as 1:1 which I want and will upgrade the others to if I choose them. The others 2:1

All will be early season rifle hunts

Thank you

Not sure you can draw G with 4 points but I have no idea as it is over the counter for me
As far as me I would hunt out of Cody with the Martoglio boys
Would be a fun hunt and they seem like they have their shit together
J Hole outfitters hunts some good areas and the Teton stuff is very cool country

That is what I’m leaning. He pretty much said I would guaranteed me that I’ll be in front of oppurtinities. And everything I have read I fully believe him

I did a drop camp for elk with jackson jole outfitters. So cant speak to how the hunt will go. But prior to packing in tre was showing us some of the bucks they killed last season and they were very impressive. He definatly knows how to kill big bucks. Hes known for it.

7D up by Cody is a class outfit. I don't know exactly what they offer for mule deer hunts, but @wymtnpounder guides for them and I couldn't recommend him any higher as a horseman and big game guide. He guided my daughter on her first cow elk hunt in November '24. He trains and sells horses as his "day job" and they are phenomenal animals. PM me if your interested, and I can share his information.

Do not waste your time in the teton wilderness for bucks. Hes only had that camp for 1 year, and that country NEVER has been known for deer. The only big deer they kill come from g/h, and he sold multiple of those camps this year, which is why he is pumping that wilderness camp. If you can get an elk tag, then sure, but if you are just going for deer, you will be wasting money

Thank you. How about the Martoglio’s or best of the west?

If you are doing late season up by cody, Im sure martoglio is fine..Id look into others who actually have camps on the migration path though. Havent heard much good about best of the west from people who use to guide for him, but i dont know much about him or his camps to tell you otherwise

I personally wouldnt suggest anything up by cody for early season deer with 4 points, unless you are just trying to burn money. If you actually want to have a good hunt for mature deer, your best bet is trying to get your point average up and draw H or maybe G if you pull a lot more strings. If you are willing to spend money on a guided hunt, Id suggest waiting to actually go on a good one, riding a horse without seeing chit isnt all that fun after the first few days.

Outfitters are going to tell you whatever to book you, I guided for years in the Teton wilderness, and we Never booked deer hunters, period. If elk hunters wanted to get a deer tag, we would go after deer once elk was punched, but the amount of deer we saw during early season before snow, was basically zero in terms of ones worth shooting.

Ok thank you, so per your recommendation just wait a little longer and let it actually be worth while?

I mean its up to you. If you actually want to pursue a mature buck, H/G is night and day over the other locations, when it comes to potential. If you just want to see country, and have an experience, then go wherever. You could call outfits like Trophy mountain and ask if they will be able to get you a tag with your points coupled with someone they already have booked etc, outfitters will usually try to help out potential hunters with lower points if they are able.
