So with the crazy state that the US is currently in with shut downs, do you/we think that the nonresident hunts will be closed this fall?

Across the US a lot of places are still shut down. This spring Montana closed its nonresident bear and turkey hunts, Oregon closed nonresident hunting and fishing until further notice. I am not sure if other states shut down their nonresident hunts or not, I did not look into it. No matter if you are heading East or West to chase whatever species you have a tag for do you think it will be open for the nonresidents this fall?

Logistically, states will loose millions of dollars just on the price of tags alone. Add in the cost of people spending money at grocery stores, gas stations, taxidermist, butchers, outdoor stores etc and we're talking hundreds of millions of dollars across the US. I don't think states want to loose millions of dollars that hunters bring to their state every fall.

Thoughts?

I saw last night that the Colorado tourism board is putting together a campaign to discourage nonresidents from visiting. The next step would be closing the state.

For the majority of states nope, too much money at stake. As for some of the leftist states with little non-resident activity (read:California) i could see it happening though

I can see those leftist states and little non-resident states closing, but the rest, like you said, they would not want to loose that much money on top of what they are already loosing. It's still 4 months away (3.5 for some states opening dates). A lot can happen between now and then.

Wyoming just closed state parks to all camping by non-residents which makes no sense

In the past few weeks a number of states have loosened their restrictions on Non-resident hunting/fishing/camping. Will be wild if they go back to shutting down

I don’t think loss of money will be a factor. States have been losing billions already by shutting down businesses, schools, parks, etc... non resident hunting revenue is a drop in the bucket.

They will decide like they always do... with bad info, politics, and panic

Too early to know at this point. Big spike and second wave, closures will be added or extended. Mostly flat to declining, they'll probably start lifting restrictions.

You're going to see different responses from each state and may see different responses between DIY and guided hunters.

The money is big, don't discount it's power in making things happen.

I have my personal thoughts on this entire pandemic, and i will leave those alone as to not steer off topic. But for all the DIY guys going out on their own, where is the harm? You're out in the forest, away from everyone. If you're on a guided hunt, I can see that being a bit tricky for each persons beliefs and law makers alike. I think the money will keep things moving.

Probably also will depend on how people’s employers are handling it at the time guys can’t turn a week long hunting trip into a 3 week trip If the job they are returning to requires a 2 week quarantine

I think each state will handle it differently. I do not believe they will take guided vs non guided into consideration as that would be a shit storm for both sides (I’m thinking WY and their outfitters, I have no first hand knowledge...just what I’ve read here over the years with their “pulling power”)

And then there's the Wi Supreme Court.......

It was about time some state did this. Governor's can't "create law" or "suspend the Constitution" with an EO anymore than the President can, but they've sure been pushing that.

Money won't be the issue here.......they'll get it from the Federal Government.....just look at Pelosi's proposed bill.

I'm concerned. Kansas has already locked me out from turkey hunting my own land! I was very lucky in the Montana draw. I landed a <1% LE tag. Politicians are currently making broad sweeping decisions that are not logical. What will the state wildlife departments do to non-res draw tags if politicians shut-down non-res hunting?

"Man that's cool you beat the odds this year. Sorry about your hunt. Good luck next year in the draw!"

Statistically I'll never draw a tag like this again.

A lot of questions come to mind if states decide to shut down non resident hunts:
what will they do with those that drew tags this year? Give them those tags next year? If the draw starts all over and you dont get a tag next year, it will be 2 years without going. Start the draws all over? Will preference points/bonus points be given back and you will gain points for next year and that will cause point creep to become even worse. There will be a lot of variables to consider and it could cause some issues. Each state will obviously handle it different but wow could it become chaos.

It is a good question... I am surprised by the comments on the economic impact. Hunting is far less beneficial to the economy than skiing and they shut skiing down across the west. Even today Colorado won't let you recreate 10 miles from your home. So not an impossible idea. I would say it is going to depend on where rates are and what is happening with spread.

I do agree that solo hunting is self isolation, but camps? Outfitter tents? Who knows.

Yes it is possible. It is happening now for spring hunts. Infections will continue to rise. It just depends on how much governments want to hurt economy and for how long.

Yesterday on nationwide shown clips, Gov Polis told the President that in CO everything was open except bars and gyms. There you have it from the horse's mouth.......the entire state and all restaurants are now open. Now he can stop harassing all these business owners and suspending restaurant's licenses.....after doing just that on Monday.
