I use Camelbak non frame Motherload for a hiking pack. It has a removable frame sheet of hard plastic and will handle 40# easily.

Yep. My favorite non framed pack was my Tenzing. Unfortunately I lent it to a friemd and he too loves it so I will likely never ask for it back.
