Started Friday morning hunting a previously scouted spot. In July I saw sign and elk.
So I walked every slope checked every dark nasty piece of country every drainage.
I found rubs, old poop and old tracks. Finally yesterday afternoon I jumped a cow but she didn't give me an ethical shot.
No bugles either. I'm heading to another nearby mountain range to try there.
As a noob I want to learn from this. What happened? The only thing I can think of is the bulls that left the rubs went to find cows at a lower elevation. I was up around the 8000' mark which is pretty high for my area of Montana.
Very low pressure. I saw only one other group of bow hunters. One grouse guy. It's not a grizzly area and not sure on wolves. One black bear that would have been a minimum state record at 25 yards and no tag!
Then there was a huge cold front that moved in last night. Not sure if how that effects the rut.
