Hi Guys - anyone hunted 6C? I read it's a really physical hunt but just wondering what that really means. Should I expect to have to hunt within 1 mile of the road to pack out an elk? Any info would be appreciated.

I grew up in NM and have hunted both 6A and 6C a lot. In comparing it to other states it is moderate terrain. The elevation is 7-9k across much of it and there are lots of areas with rolling hills, ridges and draws that are fairly easily when it comes to elk country. There are some steep drainages and draws that drop off the higher elevation that will hold pressured elk and are tougher to get access. If you kill a bull down in them it is hard work but very doable. IMO much easier than some of the high country I have hunted in CO, WY or Idaho. I would plan on hunting back in away from roads. There is a lot of roads in the unit so find the more remote areas if you want to get into elk. There are areas with no hunting or very limited hunting that boarder 6C. You should be prepared to pack an elk for more than a mile or two.

I would be more concerned with saving up a big wad for a landowner tag in those units. Not very likely to ever draw a tag there.

Ive personally never hunted 6c but I know someone that killed a 345 bull there 2 years ago and was into elk most of the hunt. It is possible to catch a caldera bull on the wrong side just not very likely
