Hey all,
I'm booked to do a guided hunt for 2nd season archery in 34 this year. Been hearing a lot about the fires in NM and how they might impact hunts this year. Doesn't look like they are near 34 right now, but just seeing if anyone has been in situations like this. Am I worrying too much this far out?

You’re not worrying too much for sure ! Southern NM is bone dry O moisture. Lincoln forest is under stage 2 fire restrictions right now. Wouldn’t surprise me if they shut the forest down through the summer or until some good rains. Fire in unit 36 a couple weeks ago burnt 6500 acres and 207 homes. keep your fingers crossed. Big winds 70 mph + and high voltage wires coming down… no bueno !!!

Welp, not what I wanted to hear but thank you for the input. I've heard that reports are showing this year should be a good year for rain come monsoon season?

It’s not unusual for southern NM to be hot and dry with fire restrictions, you just have to hope that there is no lighting that starts a fire, downed power lines or somebody in the forest who ignores the fire restrictions. Never know, next month or two we could be flooding. Good luck on your hunt.

I will also be there for 2nd archery. Pray for rain.
Any particular links or sites you guys are getting fire/drought info from?

It usually starts raining around the 4th of July.

Most years it is a tinderbox until then.

20 ft wind walls and up to 60mph gusts here with about 6% humidity. Fire got our internet tower last week but they had it back up in about 8 hours. I have sand dunes around the barn. When the haboobs hit you can’t be outside without goggles, a hood and some sort of respirator. When the dry thunderstorms hit then you are screwed...everything goes up.

inciweb is a great site to track fire activity. We have a lot of fires already!

I got caught in the rain on my bike about a month ago in the Lincoln NF and things were looking good then. Hopefully it keeps getting rain.
