What's the deal with NM Ibex female/immature? Is the state trying to kill them off ? They look kinda small from the pictures. Unique, but not worth my trip out there....

No, they are managed just like every other species. Appeal of Nanny/under 15" billy is ability to hunt them, but also successful harvest gets you into special Billy tag drawing for the next year that's only other successful nanny/immature hunters. Much better draw odds than regular billy draw.

ok, but it says OTC. & I think I read year round. I spoke with 1 guide, and he told me I'm wasting my money on hiring him. They are not normally spotted in the Florida mountain range. Is there a mountain range that has a higher harvest rate ? Definitely cute looking animal. and I would hang it on my wall.

You are misreading and got bad info. The Florida’s is essentially the only mountain range with ibex. The OTC hunt is for everywhere else. The goal is to keep them in the Florida’s.

ok, I need to read the guide. Is there a huntable population anywhere besides the Florida mountains ? Not looking to waste my time.

So it's basically a once in a life time nearly impossible draw for a non-resident. and then mountain climbing with rubber gloves, and rubber insulated clothing. Can't imagine this happening at 60 years old.

To answer your question, yes it is a waste of your time to attempt to kill an otc ibex in new mexico.

trying to kill an ibex off the mountain in this day and age is a complete waste of time and money. They don't come off much when the numbers are up, no reason to leave at all now that the herd is in the tank. They move back and forth to the little floridas but that's still in the hunt area.

I think you have received some really bad info with slightly truthful info mixed in. Lol It’s not terribly hard to draw the nanny hunt. Most draw it because they want to shoot one and get into the other billy drawing. Some just want to hunt “the rock” just to experience it first hand. They don’t come off the mountain much but you can easily find them in the draws and foothills below the cliffs. It’s just one hell of a hike to get to those areas.

The herd goes up and down. When it goes up then the G&F gives out more nanny tags.

I’m seriously confused about the rubber gloves and rubber insulated clothing too?

I meant like wet suit rubber clothing. Something to prevent the thons and cactus from biting you. At least that's what I heard. Should I say leather gloves?? and leather chaps ... like chain saw chaps.

Neroprem / rubber clothing is a terrible idea, I duck hunt in some thorn and cactus surroundEd lakes and rubber is useless vs cactus 😂

I think that’s the main contributing factor to the low success rate. Most people just don’t put the time in training to climb mountains while wearing neoprene waders or a wetsuit. They get there and the chafing eats them alive. Not to mention it’s hard to breathe with the goggles covering your nose. It’s better than losing an eye though.

If you do decide to buy one of the OTC tags, just put in a lot of time at the gym while wearing your gear. I have no doubt you’ll find some goats based on the research you’ve done.

Nothing you wear down there will keep the stickers, thorns, and cactus from biting you. Leather gloves will help, full leather boots, gaiters, etc. chaps would be terrible to wear all day walking and heavy. Just watch wear you are going mostly and avoid the thick patches of thorns. You better have a lot, a lot, and even more time dedicated if you buy an otc tag for ibex.

I laugh when reading this stuff and some of the comments people come up with. I grew up in NM and used to hunt the base of the Floridas for predators and quail. As a young man and a resident I could never draw the rifle tag so I got the bright idea to bow hunt for ibex. It actually was my very first bow hunt - what a mistake. I was in great shape and chased them all over the mountain until it snowed and the mountain quickly became treacherous. In all my time in NM I never once seen an ibex off their primary range it that does t mean they don’t leave the mountain once in a while.

Do you prefer to wear your snake proof stuff over or under the wetsuit?

Can't believe nobody mentioned all the snakes yet!

If cactus and thorns cutting you is an issue. Then yes this hunt is probably a waste of your time.

Killed a nanny last March on the Rock. Made a bone headed move on my application and got stuck with it, but super glad I did the hunt as opposed to eating the tag. The Floridas are the real deal….super vertical. Had to lower my nanny off a small cliff with a rope to safely access it. These nanny’s weight like 60 lbs wet, and are like cockroaches crawling up those rocks at the very tippy top of the mountain. Chose this pic to show the vertical environment.
