I’m in 5A right now on private. I’ve seen nothing respectable on camera and no rutting activity. I have a tag that I can activate before the end of January but nothing worthy of activating has been spotted as of late.

The late season bull action has been favorable though.

With all the airline delays going on I’m hoping, fingers crossed, to get into my hunting area on the 1st. Can’t wait! Hopefully the weather cooperates during the hunt and those bucks are on their feet during daylight!

Travel is a mess this week. My family is heading to Hawaii tomorrow and all Southwest flights out of Albuquerque were canceled this morning. I hope you make it out there without any headaches. Going to be a lot of moisture this next week.

I moved my flight up a day early. If it’s canceled I’ll be driving. Not ideal, but it’ll work out.

Southwest cancelled my flights to ABQ, actually, they cancelled the Denver stop, so I am driving. 5am tomorrow morning I start in the rain, and will probably end in the rain when I get there Saturday.

Snowed a bit here in Santa fe and looks pretty icy this morning, but it is clear so the roads will melt off quick, surrounding mountains look to have gotten a good snow, we need it!

Safe travels!

Pretty cold right now. 550 highway was ice and snow packed this morning. Usually doesn’t stay that way for long though. The black ice can be brutal.

Well, southwest came through and I’m currently wheels up at 30k feet! Next stop is Denver to get my rental truck. With luck I should be able to scout a bit this afternoon before it gets dark.

Weather for the opener doesn’t look great.

I’ve been on an archery tag here in South Eastern Colorado for the last two months in what I’m guessing is similar terrain, rolling hills, canyons and junipers. Deer were everywhere up until a week ago. I was out on Monday and was out yesterday for my last day of the season and didn’t spot a single deer where just the week before I was getting one to two stalks a day. Don’t know if it was the cold front that came through xmas weekend or just the tail end of the rut but they are definitely locked down now, Good luck in NM!

Went out scouting yesterday. Mud is the name of the game. Unless it freezes, you’ll be hoofing it to get to some areas in the unit. Even the main gravel roads are bad.

Gonna be fun, fun, fun. Hope you have chains and a shovel.

Just curious but did you look at flying into Durango for this hunt? Seems like a haul to fly in and then have to drive 6 or 8 more hours through winter mountain weather from DIA.

Regardless, best of luck. Weather is nasty but should make for a memorable hunt. Be careful with that rental truck on those roads in there. It would be a bummer to lose hunting time getting stuck.

I was wondering the same thing about flying into Denver. Even Albuquerque would be better. That would only be a 3 hour drive.

Denver is nice because it’s a direct flight. What I’d hate more than a 6 hour drive is loosing any of my luggage during a layover!

PS, these roads are no joke. My advice is to heed everyone else’s advice and bring chains! I hiked off of the paved road this morning.

Yeah that's the bad thing about small airports, very few direct flights.

Keep us posted! Hope you find a whopper!
