Nikon warranty experience-a tale of dumb luck

A few weeks ago I got the idea to pick up a Nikon ed iii 60mm to go with my ed50, thinking on my upcoming mule deer hunt a bit of extra light and magnification may pay dividends. After a bit of browsing on eBay I finally see one that’s listed as “for parts or not working”, I notice it’s an ed iii but marked as an ed ii as well for $159 and says it’s untested in the title. I shoot the guy a message and ask if it’s untested just because he didn’t have the eyepiece, to which he responds correct. Easy enough fix, I can just screw my mc2 eyepiece in it and go on.

When I finally get it I realize it’s actually missing a piece on the back that the eyepiece threads into, but that happens when you buy broke stuff. I start a support ticket with Nikon and send it in thinking that they will either tell me it’s going to cost X to fix, or you’re just screwed. I had also read about them issuing credit vouchers which I thought were a percent off in their store which would be the worst scenario because I’d have to spend more money….fast forward to the day they get it and process it I go in to check my ticket and it said replace with new model or something, then updated again to issue credit voucher. I had to rub my eyes and clean my glasses because I had to misread, it said a voucher of $1799.95 which at that time was $200 more than their monarch. I called them and asked if that was right and how it works, they said it was covered under warranty and they would issue me a credit usually on Wednesdays….being the pessimist I am I keep thinking that will get flagged and they’ll give me a prostaff 5 max as a replacement….here it is on a Tuesday and they just sent me the credit for $1799.95 and I ordered the new monarch! (It went up $100 over the weekend but who cares). Talk about some dumb luck! If I can just keep it up through season!

YMMV if you have an issue but I was very pleasantly surprised.

Zero exaggeration; I would instantly sell that monarch and buy another ED3.

The monarch is a razor competitor, the ed3 was a Swarovski competitor.

I used nikon warranty on a pair of edg's and they sent me edg 2's.

I'll second the ed3 as the winner. I won't sell mine with the big 30x wide eyepiece it's as good as any.
