Is the mil r reticle usable at 4x? I'm pretty sure the hash marks aren't usable until a higher magnification but can you see it well using it as a standard duplex reticle on 4x without illumination?

You are correct. The subtensions are not usable at 4x, but is is usable as a duplex without illumination.

Thanks. I am thinking about changing out the scope on my main hunting rifle and the nightforce is one of the options I am looking at.

Yes, you should have no problem using it as duplex reticle at 4-5x even in very low light situations. However, I personally prefer to use illumination in such conditions.
