NF 2.5-10x42 vs ?

I have a new rifle coming and am starting to look at scopes. Max on game will be 500-700 yards depending on how well it shoots and the load I find. Might take it to 1000 on targets though.

On paper the 2.5-10 NF looks like a solid option for it. Anything in the same ballpark as the NF that will dial consistently, close to or less weight, same price or less, etc?

Regards, Branden

There sure a lot of people here in N Idaho that use them on their “walking around” rifles. Usually on top of fairly light weight magnum rifles. They can have a light rifle that still has enough scope to dial for cross canyon shots. I use Nightforce SHV 3-10 on mine. I bought some for product testing, and I’ve not had a failure in many thousands of shots and ridiculous abuse.

the new 30mm vortex LHT might be an option, hasn't been out long so not much in way of long term results.

The nxs 2.5-10 checks a lot of boxes for me:
-lighter than my shv
-compact so it goes well on a kimber short action
-reliable dialing
-good glass
-mil/mil

I could do without illumination but whatever.

I’ve looked and looked and looked and keeping coming back to the little NXS for a “lightweight” scope that will dial. Thinking about buying a third one to replace an ATACR on my 6.5 PRC and save about 13 ounces.

I have two of the NF scopes you're referring to. The only two variable makes I'd consider based on your reliability and cost specs are:

>SS 3-9x w/MQ
>Bushnell LRTS 3-12x (add 3 or so ounces)

As happy as I might be with my two NFs, they will never be worth 2x and 3x the cost of a SS or LRTS.

Of the scopes in that class I’m still leaning NF nxs. There is a Leupold VX5 HD that’s a little less weight. The Vortex looks about the same as the NF specs wise. The SHV is a little heavier. Haven’t used a SS before. And it’s in MIL’s. I’m sure it wouldn’t be that difficult to use. All my scopes are MOA. I wouldn’t trust the Leupold or Vortex as much as NF or the SS.

Price point makes the SS pretty attractive and I’ve always heard they dial correctly. Wish it wasn’t in mil’s.

A new scope coming out that I think will be close specs wise is the March 1.5-15x42. Not sure when it will be available though. Probably more expensive also. 15x would be nice for target shooting though.

Can't beat NF for confidence/reliability. If you can afford the NXS, definitely go that route over the SHV.

I am considering the NX8 1-8x for a "walking around" rifle. Not in the cards right now due to house remodeling, though.

I took a Vortex Razor HD LH to Alaska and it performed well. Held zero after multiple plane rides and a bump or two. Rode my pack most of the trip in wet weather. Didn't let me down in the moment of truth, unlike a Nikon Monarch on a past hunt.

I have a couple SWFA SS fixed scopes. They seem ok at the range but haven't hunted them yet. Just put a 12x42 SS on my 300 WSM this weekend. I can say I have enough confidence to take it on a hunt. (May do spring bear with it if the opportunity presents)

Leupold makes a great scope. I never had one let me down. Some reviews say the dialing is sub-par. The only Leupold I have to dial with is a Mark 5HD, and it is on par with NF to me.

Summary: buy the NXS, but the others will likely but just fine.

I'm considering a 2.5-10 NF as well so watching this thread. Super durable, reliable and true tracking are main priority with me.

This sounds stupid, but I went that route for a couple years. It was an absolute pain in the rear picking snow and pine needles out of the objective lens. Then again, a “walking around” gun in N Idaho should really be called a “crawling around in the snow covered Douglas fir and piss alder” gun... you might be more religious about scope covers, but I’m usually pretty sure I’m about to see that rutted up mountain whitetail in the reprod... why else would I be crawling around down there getting snow and pine needles down the back of my jacket. Your mileage may vary.

Im in a similar boat. Don’t know if I want more than 10x on the top end. Looking at the NF 2.5-10, 2.5-20, maven 2.5-15, and even thinking about a S&B fixed 10x. But I’m concerned about fixed 10x

I ran a fixed 10x for one season in Kansas. Practiced shooting from 100-300 yds all summer. Ended up shooting my last KS whitetail at 60yds. 10x got it done, but lower mag would have made life easier at that moment.
