My sons and I have booked a Moose Hunt in Newfoundland for this fall. I’m looking for suggestions for a travel agent to assist us in booking flights and are experienced in helping get firearms through airports and customs. Thanks in advance.

KNow nothing about travel agent but your outfitter should walk you through getting your firearm across the border.

Agree that your outfitters should provide the firearm paperwork. Also you will need form 4457 to bring said firearm back to US.

Traveling with guns into Canada is easy, hardly any different than flying inside the USA. Locked up appropriately, then a little paperwork to be done with Canada on arrival.

You can get the 4457 form filled out proving that you owned the items in the US before your trip and didn’t buy it abroad but even that isn’t strictly necessary.

Make sure all the serial numbers match. Use a good gun case. Bring lots of locks. Don’t put ammo and rifle in the same case for international travel

Just returned from a Canada a couple of weeks ago.
Get your 4457 filled out by TSA well ahead of time. Include the serial numbers for optics as well (likely a bit of overkill there). US customs was VERY interested in seeing that documentation upon re-entry.
Make two copies, one in the gun case, one on your person.
Canadians were laid back coming into the country. Have your Canadian firearms form filled out, but not signed and $25 and your good to go.
Firearm and ammo travel separately in locked cases. Usually you can include the ammo on checked luggage. Just notify the gate agent and they'll tag the bag.
No need for TSA locks. Keeps anyone from messing w/ your optics. I've heard stories on that front...

Agree with others no travel agent needed.

To get into Canada, you need a form RCMP 5589. You can prefill it JUST DON'T SIGN OR DATE IT. When you get into Canada their customs agent will inspect the rifles and check that all serial numbers match the from, they will then have you sign the form in front of them and pay $25.

To get back into the US, prior to leaving you can get a 4457 form filled out, I have never been asked for it though. I guess it depends on where you live as to if they want to see it. I will say it doesn't hurt to have it just in case.

for flights if you're close to the border check them too.

I'm planning on driving to toronto and then it is a direct flight, a lot less time and money than flying from any of my 4 nearest airports

I drive from New Jersey after my experience with them.

We checked in at Newark and headed towards the gate. As I walked by the tote board I saw it was cancelled. Had to get a hotel in Newark ( on us), they told us plane will leave tomorrow morning at 6:00 AM, be here at 4:00AM. Get there at 4:00AM and flight postponed to 8:00AM. We fly into St. John to grab a connector to Gander. On approach Air Canada says all flights beyond St. John’s cancelled! Land, gate agent says you are on your own! I had to bribe a car rental agent to rent me a car for one day one way (for $300)!

One guy came from San Diego, his flight cancelled. Next day he lands in Toronto, has to declare his gun, they lost it! Two days later they find it. He is sitting in a hotel (they paid) for two days. What a mess! Never again!

had similar in newark with one of the regular carriers when flying to alaska.

I'm figuring toronto to gander is direct flight so it should make it a smaller chance of losing stuff. no other choice unless i drive which i don't have the time for so going to roll the dice and hope

I filled my own paperwork out and booked my own flights. Not that complicated pretty simple stuff. If anything it will be more issues bringing your gun back home which blows my mind.
what issues did you run into on the return trip?

Honestly hadn't crossed my mind yet to look at the forms bringing stuff back to the US, my last border crossing with guns i was just a passenger and middle of the night in montana so the guy just looked at the paperwork and passports and sent us on our way
