Need a set up for water purification. Not familiar with any of the products.

I have a Steripen that I use pretty frequently- it's the Opti (2 CR123 batteries); UV kills bacteria, virus and protozoan- I think most water treatment plants use UV now a days; the Steripen is nice as it takes about a minute to treat a liter water and it's ready to drink

I will also carry a dozen or so Aquatabs (they treat 2 liters of water/tab), on the unlikely chance something were to go awry with the Steripen- weight for the tabs is under 0.1 oz; if I'm going really light, I'll just use tabs (takes ~ 30 minutes for them to do their magic)

Do you sterilize the water in a pot or in your camel back?

You just fill your water bottle up in the creek, stick the pen in and stir! Takes 90 seconds.

UV light is the most effective way to kill stuff in your water besides boiling.

And yes I recommend talking tablets too because I have had my batteries go out on me once. Now I just put fresh ones in before every hunting season.

Well steri pen will be added.
Any suggestions for a filter for dirty water? Or will steri one handle that too? (Small water hole or wallow)

Sawyer has a gravity system that I see a lot of people use. I used to use a sawyer squeeze but switched to a steripen adventurer last year but I could use either. I like how the steripen filters but if the water is dirty it isn’t clear when you drink it like it would be with the sawyer system.

Recommend a gravity system?

I’ve only used a Katadyn base camp. Worked great but there may be others. Nasty water we ran thru a bandana pre-filter. Paper coffee filter works too

I use a 2 liter Platypus bottle that I cut the top off of (maybe 3" above the 1 liter line)- it folds up nicely, weighs 0.5 oz and stands on it's own- that's what I treat as I use a 1 liter Platypus mostly and you can't get the pen in it

Agreed- pre-filter "thick" water with a bandana or like
