What calls would you guys recommend for a newb. I've used mouth calls some for turkeys, so I can use a diaphragm call somewhat. Too many to choose from. Also what dvd's or cd's should I get. I see a lot of people online really support Elknut's stuff. May have to place an order soon.

Hey thanks. That is a good thread. I should have searched it. I have to spend a lot more time on here in the next several months and search all the old posts also.

no problem bwlacy. you really dont have to worry about doing a search every time before starting a thread or asking a question on here. nobody on this site is going to jump on you for that. I just happend to remember us discussing this topic last week.
BTW, welcome to Rokslide

Here's a video clip I put together a while back that may help you out some when learning to use mouth reeds for your elk hunts. It's slightly different than turkey sounds! (grin) I also mention several reeds that are very user friendly but will work well for hunters of all levels of experience! Hope this helps!

I've been looking at the different packages. Not sure which one too get. They all look good to me. Not sure how much info to take in. Might get information overload. Maybe package 7, 8, or 9 on his store site. Does anybody have his XTR call?

bwlacy, I can see you're are confused as which way to turn so let me help out here! If you feel at no time you will be able to use mouth reeds because of a serious gag reflex issue then you do not need PKG # 9 with the mouth reeds & DVD Instruction, you will be better off with PKG # 8 & add the ElkNut 5 DVD to that PKG. If this suits you watch the Vol 4 DVD first then the other.

If you feel this is too much then consider the Vol- 4 DVD & the ElkNut 5 DVD, you can add a bugle of your choice to these. The XTR Bugle has a removable mouthpiece as shown in this video clip & then can be used with mouth reeds, it's the best of both worlds! (grin) Hope this helps!

I've purchased a couple primos mouth reeds and cannot for the life of me make a good elk sound with them (not sure which ones they are). I am pretty good with turkey mouth calls and was pretty disappointed in myself when I couldn't figure these out. I recently saw one of Paul's posts about the Mellow Yellow & Raging Bull saying that they were user friendly so I ordered them up and they arrived yesterday. Needless to say, Paul was right on the money! I'm nowhere near where I need to be as far ask the calling goes but I can tell already these two reeds have me headed in the right direction.

The post I am referring to is in this thread: http://www.rokslide.com/forums/showthread.php?25513-Calls-for-a-beginer

It can be a little overwhelming, but in the end, a call is just a call. I know people that buy one or two every year, and they all look like they are about the same quality. I use the same diaphragm call for turkeys and elk ( for both bugling and cow calling). My bugle tube is a 1.5" diameter plastic tube.

If there is a Ferrari vs Yugo quality difference out there, I haven't seen it.

ElkNut puts out some good videos and appears to be a quality hunter and businessman. I would have no reservations about buying calls from him.

Thanks for the help. I'm not worried about gaging, just not sure if I can make the calls sound correct. I haven't watched the video yet, but will. I appreciate your input, and I'm not even a customer yet :)

Hey Matt, thanks! Don't give the wife our ph # - (grin) Enjoy your new endeavor bud, it's addicting but it's one of the most awesome experiences you will enjoy in hearing Bugling Bulls in the wild! Please contact me if you have any questions at all once you've viewed the material, I'd be glad to help out any way I can! Thanks!
