Short version:
A long-planning trip to New Zealand with my wife and parents ended up including hunting, in no small part because my stepdad's knees only have so many more alpine hikes in them. Destination was further complicated when my wife got pregnant (as planned) a few months before we left. After dealing with all the logistics and getting all the gear on the plane and headed way west, all I had to worry about was weather shutting us down. It didn't. We had warm, almost hot sun all four days we were in the mountains, and way more success hunting than I thought would be possible. It is a trip I do not expect to equal in satisfaction very often again. Ever.

PS: Several folks here gave me some very precise and useful info on how to find critters once we were up in the mountains, and to them I offer many, many thanks.
