Has anyone done a DIY New Zealand hunt? If so, how did you go about planning it?

Canterbury, good access and plenty of tahr with a chance at a red or cham in places.

You'll be surprised at how ridiculously easy tahr hunting is. TV hunting shows and "famous" hunters try to make it seem hard to give them the appearance of being bad arse ultimate hunters, just ain't so.
Tahr are dumb as anything, quite often will stand there looking at you, I've actually had a 10" spot us at 30m and walk into 7m before deciding to leave. country is a steep in places but go at your pace and you'll be laughing.

It's one of the best hunts you'll do, breathtaking country and people are the best on earth there.

If you want a real challenge one day go to nz for public land sika or hunt public land sambar in Australia! Bush stalking public land reds is bloody hard too, they're much different than the farm bred hf ones you always see.

That's a pretty general question. Not to be a dbag but have u done any research? Do a Google search. The research is as fun as the hunt for me.

270 days of NZ hunting for me, I'll never buy a tag again in the states.

And a hint, big lone chamois bucks are 10 times harder to hunt then tahr. Tahr are easy in my mind.

I'd like to follow that up with one more thought.

I Your biggest hurdle is logistics of getting to NZ with a rifle. The trickiest part is getting an import permit if you don't have a kiwi gun sponsor. Avoid a layover In oz. don't fly Fiji airways (no ammo allowed)

As for specifics, there are a lot of kiwi hunters that wouldn't be stoked to see Americans pouring into known Spots. Shoot a few nannies before harvesting a bull. Don't chopper in. I want to full on kill mother fukker Americans who are too lazy to hike a day in and would rather buzz me with a chopper.

What else. Check out the DOC website, everything you need to know can be found there.

I've never had an issue getting rifles through, I just tell the cops I'm hunting and don't have w fixed address and it's never been an issue.

Im assuming you mean heli hunting and not just paying to get flown in and dropped off? Nothing wrong with the latter in my view.

That's cuz ur ozzy

Way harder if ur from the states.

You can't even do the online paperwork without a resident gun license number

I'm not real keen on lodges who drop guys off and pick them up daily. Especially when guys literally step out of chopper and hunt from under prop wash. It's crap mate.

Maybe I'm jaded, but don't get me started on 18 point paddock stags, and posting it on Instagram like its a damn trophy. and all that crap. I was tempted to fork over some loot to pop a free range 14 point on a cull hunt but it was roaring at me at 35 meters so common sense does elude a guy during those times.

If a kiwi guys wants to get dropped up on the tops because of time constraints that all well and good but there's no reason to fukkin have a guide and all that jazz with dinner back at the lodge. The biggest issue is the kiwi government knows it's missing out on revenue by not taxing us out of country hunters. Mark my words within 5 years their will be fees to be paid for us.

Btw where u at in oz mate? We'll be doing a surf mission in March. Be fun to meet up. No hunting for me, oz doesn't like ar15's lol

any hunt can be made to be ridiculously easy. with a rifle i agree but packing into westland with a trad bow, completely different story! any hunt can be made to be a supreme challenge through self imposed restrictions.

spending 50 days backpacking in westland before you kill a bull with a trad bow is hardly synonymous with being 'ridiculously easy' as anyone who has actually done it will tell you.

your confused with sheep hunting. lol
I know what you mean re. Bow hunting them, hardest part is utilising the make-up of the mountains to get inside bow range.

My last tahr trip was with a bow, passed up some animals and didn't end up finding anything worthwhile when I had the bow in hand. If I hunted them again I'd definitely take the bow again.

Funny you should mention that about sheep, when I was hunting tahr I was wondering "I bet these guys are very similar to sheep, big price tag on guided hunts are what make them difficult to obtain moreso than the animals themselves".

with a rifle you can hunt them from below. with a bow you have to get close from above them and that completely changes the game.

i agree with the price tag comment. $40k for a sheep hunt! besides the ridculous price, it's not DIY for me as a non resident alien which is turns me off personally. besides i'm yet to see a photo from a sheep or goat hunt that compares to the ruggedness of tahr country, IMO. so i just go and hunt tahr and chamois for a fraction of the cost plus i can do so whenever and how often i please.

There seems to be some great advice here so far.......

"You'll be surprised at how ridiculously easy tahr hunting is. TV hunting shows and "famous" hunters try to make it seem hard to give them the appearance of being bad arse ultimate hunters, just ain't so.

"The biggest issue is the kiwi government knows it's missing out on revenue by not taxing us out of country hunters. If it were a 10" cham he woulda taken a dirt nap before he took a step from where we'd first seen him!
With a bow I'd have taken him but 10" bull with a rifle wouldn't mean much to me.
