I've been looking around and searching for a light mountain rifle to add to my stable. I thought I was set on the smaller 6.5's until I happened to stop by cabelas and went by the used gun rack. Found this Remington model 7 in 308 laying there. Picked it up and it felt perfect. Could not put it down. Was listed at $700. Got them to take $200 off the listed price so home she came. It looks to be in excellent shape with no marks. Has a recessed crown and the stock has a metal bedding block. Will be a perfect first big game rifle for my son as well!

Right on. My first big game rifle was a Remington Model 7 stainless in .308. Still have it to this day...and its still knocked over more game than any other hunting rifle I own. I have no doubt your boy will like it...especially at that price...nice score!

What is actually smaller on these rifles? I've been looking to get one in 35 Remington possibly. In Indiana we can use the 35 if we cut the brass length down some to make it 1.800 inches in length.

Do they feel like a child size rifle?

The back bridge on the receiver is shorter than an m700 and the barrel is a lightweight 20". As far as it feeling small I can't help you there! I've used mine since I was 12 and it just feels right to me!

I have two Model Sevens in stainless/synthetic .260 Rem caliber. I hunted with the first one for 15 years and passed it to my oldest grandson (10 years old now). Found another this year and bought it for my second grandson. I would buy another for grandson # 3 if I could find one and another for myself. Does it feel small? Not to me. It is compact but I tree stand hunt mostly and it carries very well. I have as much confidence in this rifle on white tails as any rifle I ever carried and at 58 years old I have carried several. Good find on your rifle. I hope you and your son get as much enjoyment from it as I and my grandsons have.

Heck yeah!
Similarly, my first bolt rifle was a Seven in .308. Same experience too, picked it up and just couldn't put it down!
Have a couple custom hunting rifles on Seven actions, they still just feel 'right'...

Heck I'm building a 6.5SAUM on a Seven right now. Will be a little badazz, fo' sho'...

Have fun with yours & hunt safe!!!

I have a Model 7 MS from the Custom Shop at Remington in .257 Roberts. Bought it the first year they brought is out. I've taken a bunch of Whitetails with it, and it's pretty.
