New to Loading 10mm - Component Suggestions?

Just added a 10mm to the collection and need to get all the reloading components for it (dies, brass, primers, bullets, shell holder, everything).

I will be keeping it filled with hot hardcast, so I might as well practice with the same thing/something similar. Dunno if the heavier recoil sping will like lighter ammo, but I guess I can always change it for practice. I'll probably get some 220 grain Underwoods for carrying or brew my own eventually.

Any recommendations on components? Specifically powder, bullets and brass, but I'll take any advice.

Thanks!

Any thoughts on the Hi-Tek coating on the underwood bullets? Does it allow you to shoot them out of a standard glock barrel?

Any clue who they get their bullets from?

Interested in loading the 10 also as I recently bought a G29 and ammo is scarce and expensive.

I've always used Starline brass and CCI 300's, and have the best results with Accurate No. 9 and Power Pistol. Most of what I load are 180gr Hornady XTP's. I also shoot Underwood 200gr hard cast.

Not sure if it is just my gun (Springfield xDM, 5.3” barrel), luck, or what but I’ve found 10mm very easy to load. Good speed and accuracy with everything I’ve shot, factory and reloads.

I bought 2 boxes each of Underwood 200 and 220 hardcast. I shot 5 rounds for accuracy through a chrono to verify it shot well in my gun and I was getting at least close to the advertised speeds. It did. Then I did a mag dump to verify it would cycle through the gun. No issues. The remaining two boxes are what I carry in the woods for protection or if I’m going to hunt with the handgun. I shot 5 220’s through the chronograph a couple days ago and got a 1167fps average with a 10fps standard deviation. Underwood advertises 1200fps. Accurate too. I also have 40 rounds of Underwood 180gr with XTP bullets. I keep the gun loaded with that and a spare mag next to the bed.

For reloading I’ve used the Sig factory ammo brass and Starline brass. I have 500 pieces of Starline and will use mostly that going forward. I’ve shot 155, 180, and 200 grain Hornady XTP bullets all with good speed and accuracy. However, for the range, I bought 500ct each of ACME 200gr and SNSCasting 220gr coated lead bullets. With shipping they came out to .11 or .12 cents a bullet. Very happy with these bullets. They load well and I got good accuracy and speed from them. The Hornady XTP’s maybe edged them out on accuracy. But it was so close that it was insignificant. Attached is a 20yard group shooting with no support. The round that hit low was definitely my fault. That’s the ACME 200gr bullet. 1220fps avg and standard deviation of 14fps measured for 10 rounds. That is 70fps over Hornady max load data for 200gr XTP’s. My barrel is .3” longer than their test barrel. The SNSCasting 220’s shot equally, if not better, than the ACME 200’s. But again so close it is hardly worth mentioning. I use Blue Dot powder. It has been so good I’ve not tried anything else yet. Primers are CCI no. 300. BTW, there is much more load data on 200gr bullets. 220gr you will mostly be working up your own. That is what I did for the 220’s I loaded. Started with Hornady minimums for 200gr and stopped well short of their max 200gr load.

To keep a long story long, I like using factory ammo for all defensive/protection purposes. The Underwood ammo is my go to ammo for that. Powerful, reliable, and accurate. For the range, my reloads with the coated cast bullets. I’ll load them hot to mimic the factory Underwood for that kind of practice. But will load them a little more mild (for 10mm) for volume shooting. I shoot that gun a decent amount and don’t need to beat it up non-stop with the very high powered loads.

Is the 200 or 220 better for woods defense?

Up for debate?

Not sure anyone has definitive data to really say. Nothing that would prevent an internet argument at least, lol. I believe in heavy, fast, flat nose, very hard cast bullets for penetration. But I’d carry either weight. The ACME, SNSCasting and other cast bullets don’t have the hardness of the bullets Underwood uses, 21 BHN. They more likely have a 16-17 BHN. I would not use those for bear defense or even medium game hunting.

I use lee dies and unique powder, the only reason really I use unique is that I got ~ 10lbs of it a while back and it dosent go very fast when you are only using like 5 grains of powder per bullet.

I like the Montana Bullet Works hardcast bullets with HiTek coating. Longshot, new starline and CCI 300s gets me to 1205 fps and one inch or better accuracy at 20 yards resting on sandbags.
standard glock 20 barrel, I do run a SS guide rod and 22lb spring.
Double Tap 200 WFNGC has always been my carry choice because that is THE best bullet (MBW is extremely close). Hardcast bullets are all about the hardness and meplat diameter on the front with nice crisp edges. I haven’t looked at the underwoods in a few years but their first hardcast bullets were not in the same conversation as DT/bearclaw. Not talking performance of the loaded round, just the bullet.

I never liked the points on the underwood in their pics.

Speaking of reloads. Does anyone have experience with both 200 and 220 grain hard cast? I watched a video with a Glock 20 like mine and the 220 grain tumbled after a fairly short distance. I will carry mine for bears as well so I need it to fly straight if I ever need it. Hopefully this is a relevant hijack.

I’ve shot both out of a Springfield xDM (5.3” barrel) and had good results with both bullet weights, my reloads and Underwood ammo. But I don’t think I’ve shot the 220’s further than 10-12 yards. 200gr I’ve shot at 40 and 70 yards with good results. In the end you just can’t know until you actually shoot them out of your own gun. But my results say it is worth trying 220’s.

Upgrading to a aftermarket barrel with a fully supported chamber helps the glock tremendously, in my g40 it was bulging cases bad at 8.4 grains of longshot with a 180gr bullet , I went to 9.6gr with a kkm barrel with no pressure problems, stopped there and backed down to 9.4 stiff load but very shootable
