Hello everyone. I recently move to Anchorage AK and look forward to taking advantage of all the awesome opportunities this state has to offer, including hunting. I’ve done some deer hunting back east, but totally new to western hunting. Excited to learn and to get started

Welcome. My advice. Do NOT spend your money on huge rifles, big handguns, etc. A 308, 6.5 Creedmore or whatever will work fine (yes it will read the threads on them).
Instead of wasting money on a closet of guns focus on gear that gets you out or finds an animal (Binoculars, boat, ATV, etc). Oh and a reliable tent.

And as a former southern who moved up more than a decade ago…

Don’t worrry about the ATVs and boats yet.

Any rifle will drop a moose. This is my daughters first moose she shot this year with a 6.5cm.

I haven’t strapped a handgun on my chest in the last 4 hunting seasons.

Get good rain gear and some good Binos. Determine how long you have to hunt and I recommend finding someone to tag along with next season to learn the ropes. Moose are huge.

A good tent is a must and I now run tipis so I can stand up. I also run hot tents so i can dry my gear.

Feel free to reach out and I don’t mind sharing my mistakes with you.

Only thing is, you really aren’t in Alaska. You are almost in Alaska.

As the self-appointed chairman of the welcoming committee, it is my privilege to extend a laurel, and hearty handshake (virtual, of course) to our new AK member.
