I just picked up a Tikka T3X Lite 22 inch barrel in 7mm PRC 1/8 twist. I previously had a 308 T3X CTR in 308 that shot lights out. It was a half MOA gun and I was expecting this 7mm PRC to be no different.

I took it to the range today after putting a Salmon River Solutions picatinny rail and Maven RS 1.2 on the gun. The RS 1.2 was torqued to 18 inch pounds in Talley Sporter scope rings and 25 inch pounds to the Salmon River Solutions picatinny rail. The Salmon River Solutions Rail was torqued to 15 inch pounds to the receiver, all screws were thread locked with blue Loctite 242. I was shooting at 5000 feet elevation, 80 degrees and almost zero wind.

After building a solid shooting position using a bipod and rear bag I began to sight in the rifle. My shots were all over the place. The best group I was able to get was 1.5 MOA with Hornady ELDx hunter 175 grain ammo which I chronographed at 2775 fps. Sometimes I shot high, low, left or right all in the same shot 3-5 shot group. Thinking it was just me, which I haven’t completely ruled out yet, I grabbed my AR with a 1-6 LPVO and had a second round impact on steel at 500 yards. I proceeded to hit the steel 10 more times before going back to the Tikka.

My results were the same. I shot 40 rounds over the course of two and a half hours, twenty Hornady ELDxs and twenty Hornady Match 180 grains. The gun did not like the match 180 grain ammo which shot closer to two inch groups.

Overall I’m confused as to why the gun didn’t shoot. I understand that not all factory Tikkas are going to shoot sub MOA out of the box, but I was definitely expecting one group to be under an MOA at least. Is anyone else having issues with these new 7mm PRC Tikkas or just me? I will be shooting again Monday and will capture pictures for proof. Hopefully I will have pictures of 1/2 to 3/4 inch groups and I can chalk this up just to a bad one time experience.

I just wanted to get this experience out there as a potential precautionary tail for new Tikka 7mm PRC buyers and to get ideas how I can remedy this in case I went wrong somewhere.

Might want to check out some barnes 160 lrx or hornady cx. Theres a couple other bullets to try

Those torque values seem low especially the ring/rail and rail/action numbers. I haven’t ran those Talley rings they may be different but Seekins rings and other similar ones are usually 50-55 for the ring clamp at rail. Rail to action torque is usually 20-25 IIRC. I would also double check your action screw torque.

That’s some stiff recoil in a tikka lite package and I agree whats been posted those torque values seem low for clamping to the pic rail.
I’d throw some sort of muzzle device on and shoot off sand bags

Anecdotal but had similar feelings shooting my superlite in 7RM. 1.5" to 2" through several different boxes of factory ammo. Finally tried 168g hybrid hunters and it shot like a different rifle, at or just under 1" for 10rd groups.

I know some guys say their T3x shoots anything and everything great, that wasn't quite my experience. Once I found what it likes, it shoots fantastic. You may need to look into a few different bullets before you find the "magic" one.

Rifle set up aside , my 7 PRC (prefit barrel) doesn’t like factory 175 ELDX, like 2-2.5” 10 round groups. Factory 180s are 10 under 1”.

I agree about the recoil and about the torque... however I believe the Talley torque spec from manufacturer is 25in lbs. For what it's worth, I just installed a set of Warne Maxima rings on a .223 and they are also 25in lbs on the cross bolts. 25 might be technically sufficient, but on a lightweight heavy kicker I get a little more peace of mind with the more "heavy duty" rings that torque at something more like 65in lbs (Nightforce, Hawkins, etc).

Muzzle brake? Suppressed? Or no muzzle device? Did you adjust the pull weight of the trigger? Just guessing, but a magnum with no muzzle device and a 3-5lb trigger can be tough to group like others have mentioned.

@DesertHiker176
It would be worth while to pull the stock off. Make sure there is zero barrel contact from stock or screws from added pic rail. Degrease action screws, thread lock and torque stock back on at 60ftlbs +/-. Then try again with a couple different ammo types.

HORNADY FACTORY 7PRC AMMO IS TRASH (probably).

I’ve had a custom proof tikka 7PRC and discovered that Hornady 180gr was all over the place lot to lot in terms of accuracy and speed. They have known powder sourcing issues.

Try federal ELDX. Try different lot numbers of Hornady. I bet it’s not your rifle.

I saw 3/4 MOA to 2.5+ MOA swings

This is more than likely a skill issue.

308 vs 7prc recoil is substantial. 7prc is using 20+ grains of powder which roughly 50% more.

My first thought was action screws. Disassemble the rifle, degrease the action and screws, paint pen, proper torque.

Shoot.

Still shooting like garbage reinstall your scope and mounts following this thread.

About 80fps difference. Shower lot shot much better. Federal ELDX recouped my speed and kept accuracy.

About 80fps difference. Slower lot shot much better. Federal ELDX recouped my speed and kept accuracy.

I really appreciate the replies everyone. This definitely gives me a way forward on things to check.

I should’ve said in the post that I was shooting suppressed. It was the same can I had on the 308, an Aero Precision Lahar 30k. I did not lighten the trigger out of the box. I definitely noticed it seemed like a heavy trigger pull.

I’m going to take these suggestions and will update later with outcomes. Hopefully I will have good news to report!
