I am in the process of acquiring a rem 700 short action for a new build. I can’t decide what caliber to go with. It will be primarily used for deer sized game, likely a 300 yard max range. I already have 7mm-08, .270, .280AI, and .30-06. I am thinking of something in the 6mm range, maybe a .260. FWIW, I am not dependent on factory ammo. Throw me some ideas. I would love some opinions to consider.

Is there a reason the 7mm-08 won’t do it? That would have been my choice

Wanting a new rifle is always a valid reason for the record

Based on what you list, I would go either .358 Win or .350 Rem Mag.

I'd rebarrel the 7-08 into a .243 Win with a 1:7 twist. Throated for 110 A-tip. It would be stretched with a Wyatts box or I'd make my own to get some extra space. And then I'd change my mind and go with 6mm super long range.

I find the 7-08 lackluster and see no reason to own one if I have a .280.

223 or 22 Creedmoor just to have something different. Everything you have will cover your specs.

308 because it will do everything since you reload. Components are easier to find as well. The 223 suggestion is solid as well.

300 yards or less…
If you have read this thread, then you should know the answer…
.223, .223AI, 22-250, 22CM, 22GT With 77 TMK or other referenced match bullet
If you haven’t, then you may wish to do so before you build…

The ones you already have are all capable of meeting your needs, so I assume this is for “fun”.

Some good suggestions have already been thrown out and I am partial to the .223 and .22 Creed crowd if you want a SAAMI chambering.

If you want something different, my vote would be for a 6X45AI or a 7TCU. Brass is super easy to acquire, both are very forgiving cartridges to load for, and to shoot, you can load heavy for deer or load light for varmints, and 300 yards is well within the lethal range for both.

Yes, I know I have the bases covered for what I “need”, but I really enjoy the research and selection process of a build. Hence the “just because” I want one for this rifle. Great suggestions so far, thanks! . A little supposed that the 223 has gotten as many recs as it has.

Personally, I’d you want to be “different”, quarterbore is a solid choice.
