I have an older ('90s) Remington 700 chambered in .270 that needs a new barrel. It is a standard bolt faced long action. Im bored with the .270 as a cartridge and am thinking of spicing things up a bit and going a different route. I already own a 6.5 PRC and a 16" 308 both on short actions and im not looking for something that duplicates these guns i.e. no 6.5-284s.

Any new sexy cartrige selections for an easy barrel swap on this action? Dont want to have the bolt face opened up. Dont want to purchase a new bolt face assembly. Dont want to handload ammo. preferably no 6.5's if there are any suggestions out there.

Second on the 280 AI (I have one being build right now)

Alternatively, 9.3x62 or 35 Whelen. Either of these would be hammers when you get your coastal brown bear hunt or moose. (Not that your 308 or 6.5 can’t get the job done)

280AI is the way to go here. I'm sure you could find a company that could supply you with the 180gr ELDM loaded. Just make sure you build it with a 1:8" twist.

The 280 Ackely is a solid vote but I also like the idea of stepping up to something like the 35 Whelen. I know the tiny cartridges are popular on here but it is fun to sling a big piece of lead sometimes!

This is one of those rare times in which we mostly agree.

IMO, this is the cartridge in which God made the standard long action for. A true sweet spot for up to 180s with proper throat and twist.

For comparison, I have a 20 inch 7 saum running 180 hybrids at 2840. They're near balastic twins.

How short do you think you could run a 280 AI?

The 22CM and 25CM's both are pretty sweet.

I have one of the 6mm-06 variants and it’s kind of fun. Not much different than 25-06 though.

On the bigger end a 338-06 or 35 whelen would be cool.

Oh wait - no hand loading. I got nothing.

I'd say 18" would still be fine. Put it this way, an 18" 280AI with a 180 would still be quicker than a 24-26" 7mm08 with a 180. If it was my build, I'd finish it at 22" + MB (we can't get suppressors easily in Aus).

You can’t get factory ammo yet, but I also have a 22 creed barrel for my long action Remington - 6 creed would also be a fun barrel. I see new take off 243 factory Remington barrels with 1:8 twist for under $200 on eBay. My loaner varmint outfit is a factory heavy 22-250 on the long action.

I believe there are several companies making factory 338-06 and 35 Whelen. Yeah, everybody has a 280AI on here...but how many have a 338-06 or 35 Whelen? Not many! Yes, to the cool factor. I have several 338-06 rifles and several 35 Whelens. Phooey to the baby squirrel cartridges and the man-buns!

The added recoil of a 338 or 35 cal for such a reduced BC compared to the 180gr ELDM really doesn't do it for me but it may scratch an itch for some folks, it does have a cool factor.
