My simple humble advice is this: Be prepared to fail. Do what you can to succeed, but don't be surprised if all that work doesn't pan out. Hope for the best, expect the worst.

In your first year, if its legal take it. Build on success, and take what you can get.

Find a couple units you like. Plan some vacation time in the summer. Enjoy seeing some new country and bring a backpack to go scout those areas. Check for bedding, feeding, and drinking areas or any areas that just seem "Elky". The fun part is finding new areas to go hunt!

A lot of good advice here. And I agree with the_bowhunter. If U can swing a scouting trip this summer... That would help a lot.... Preferably in July... When I did my first trip out.. All the map research and google earth scouting helped a lot. But when U see the country for the first time. Maps don't do it justice... A lot of great info on here.. About back packing gear on here... With the gear U are going to need... I bought a lot of cheap gear... It was heavy. It worked but its all been replaced. So do Ur research on gear... Bye the best gear U can.... Take it on a couple trips to test it out... Before Ur trip...... Good luck

I am east coast guy and everything on here is solid advice, but my goodness be in shape. The altitude is what kills me every year. I try to get out there early and give myself two days to get adjusted and I pound the water down. You can google earth all you want, talk to everyone from local ranchers to Wardens to Cameron Hanes to Jesus himself, but if you can't get around and can't keep your breathe, it will suck. It will really suck! The next thing I would add is buy the best gear you can afford and use it before you go. Don't skimp on boots and remember it is suppose to be fun so enjoy it. It used to be posted on here a lot, but ounces equal pounds and pounds equal pain. And find Aron's article on the GIF; it's worth a read.

Get lost in the mountains and enjoy God's creations - just be in shape when you are enjoying it....

Why would post count matter....I said I'm open to elk, whitetail, or mule deer. I know some states have combo tags. I know certain units are better than others as far as elk is concerned. I don't know if an archery tag would be easier to get than a gun tag. That's why I said I'm open to either one. I'd love to bowhunt but didn't know how the tags worked. And yes I've got on CPW website but honestly idk where to start and which state wildlife area I need to be looking at.

If you read that thread he mentioned you'll understand perfectly well why post count matters. It also matters to pick a state, a weapon, and a species. Getting argumentative about it certainly won't help your cause. Tons of info on here with the search function. Read up, formulate a plan, and come back with pointed questions.
