I'm getting the itch for a new rifle for the second moose hunt. I mean the 358Win dropped the first one dead in his tracks from.....50ft, lol although i was prepared for up to 300yds. I have a 30cal void in my collection though. So I'm thinking Ruger in 300Win Mag.

That's the rifle and cartridge I used to take my first two moose. The next 23 or so were with 308s or 30-06s and all of the above worked very well, and about the same (if anything, I'd give the nod to the 308 for some of the more impressive/memorable kills - probably more to do with chance than anything else).

I guess to say, pretty much any 30-caliber 308ish and up is going to work fine. I'd look more at the whole rifle system and pick something with all the characteristics you're looking for.

If you need a new one, and I’m sure you know you don’t 😂 then it should be something more interesting than the 300 WM!

Personally I think you probably need a 338 Federal to go along with your 358 win, or even better a 338-06!

I was almost going to build a 338Federal but went with the 358Win

Your 358 suggests you like uncommon, but cool things.

Why not go for a 300 H&H?
You are right on spot, but I am concerned about maximum performance on this one. I have friends trying to pursued me into a short magnum or prc, but I just can't bring myself to a fully modern round either.

Thinking about the Ruger 77 FTW(stainless) with HS Precision stock. It would be good for the wet weather and conditions, and also a good Alaska gun if I ever get there too.

Mine was a 300 WM Model 77 with a boat paddle stock. That was a great rifle, no doubt, but a heavy bastard...considering I'm the original UL-UL weenie.

When I first moved to Alaska I asked what I needed for moose and that's what was recommended. Within a couple years, I figured out that a little 20" 308 Scout Rifle would work just fine, and never looked back.

Seeing you have a 280 Remington, and a 358 Winchester, I'm just not seeing much gap a moose could squeeze through...but what fun is that?

If not a modern belt- less round but max performance then you should definitely consider a 300 WBY
