New Mexico SNAP discount on permits

Doesn't matter what we think,

"The New Mexico Legislature passed Senate Bill 5 during the 2025 Legislative Session. New Mexico residents participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program are eligible to receive a 25% discount on all licenses as established in 17-3-13 NMSA for the following license year."

This is the first state I’ve heard passing such a law. I think it does matter in terms of potential implementation in others.

Just saying, New Mexico is extremely poor and a lot of people, especially in the north-central part of the State rely on hunting to eat. That area of the state is also notorious for poaching so maybe making it cheaper to get a license might help curb poaching? I don't know, just trying to think of what the reasoning might be.

I'm not clear on the case against a 25% discount on tags for folks who have less than $3000 in total assets. Is the case that they should be working instead? Do you think we shouldn't subsidize food assistance generally with SNAP programs for folks?

This might be the difference in someone following the rules, taking a deer during hunting season, versus ignoring them and taking wildlife out of season to put meat on the table. I'm all for it.

It costs what it costs to manage game and fish resources.

Cutting costs for certain groups doesn’t make the overall cost of said management less. Someone else has to pick up the slack or it doesn’t get picked up.

There’s no such thing as free lunch.

Poacher is a poacher, offering cheap license will not change their ways!

There is a definite culture in certain areas of certain folks who just say If I need an Elk I just go out and get one, that is basically a quote from a guy I towed out of a mud hole a while back while scouting for Elk.

I am not really against the discount but not really for it either.

Probably the dems trying to get votes from the other side I would assume.

I get what both of you are saying. I don't believe it will curb poaching, if they are doing it now, why pay for a permit. Is this an anti-poaching thing or just a discount? There are plenty of people in poverty, and that sucks, but getting hunting and fishing discounts is probably not on their minds. JMHO

Poor people in New Mexico are not starving. If anything we need to make food more expensive.

We need to stop making shitty food artificially cheap through subsidies that protect the interests of the world’s largest ag and food conglomerates, all the while rapidly killing our population.

And then we can make real food and real health optimization artificially cheap.

The "government".......local, state, or federal, ABSOLUTELY shouldn't be doing any of that.

It never was the purpose or responsibility of "government" to provide welfare to "the people". But once it did start.......we've been on a downward spiral as a nation ever since. Now it's just considered SOP and an expected entitlement by a very large majority of the population. All of those folks have been conditioned to this practice whether they are receiving it or vote to continue it.
