Just apply in the low demand areas. Make sure there is enough public land if you draw. Just throwing away license money for high demand areas. 2% odds usually.

Depends on how many other tags I’ve draw or plan to draw. If I don’t have any other hunts I apply for opportunity if I have hunts lined up I shoot for the moon.

Definitely swing for the fences on the your first choice. NM pulls applications randomly and looks at all three choices before moving to next, and as they say you can't win if you don't play.

Your first choice should always be one of the top tier hunts. 2nd and third should be easier to draw (statistically speaking) hunts.

I swing for the fence. If I am going to use my time hunting elk it better be in an area that I can have a great enjoyable hunt.

keep in mind that you are now paying for a nonrefundable license as well.

Its still one of the least expensive states. Especially if you apply for more than just elk. Also I actually have a chance to draw any unit unlike Wyoming and Colorado. I know 0.5% isn't much of a chance but its better than 0.0%.

As a NM resident I agree with this. The draw odds are fairly easy to find on the website and order your 3 choices from best units (lowest odds) to best opportunity to draw(highest odds). I personally swing for the fences for my top 2 then put a good chance I will draw chance on my 3rd.

I like to put all three choices on easier taags to draw. I'm always trying to find a sleeper unit I can draw easier but still find a good mature animal.

This will be my first year to apply for New Mexico. I plan to swing for the fences at least do my first choice. At least my last choice will be an “easier” to draw tag.

Once you get outside fo the Gila units, and into some better draw odds units, I'm assuming the trophy quality drops off, but does the opportunity drop off quite a bit in the easier to draw NM units? Seems like the Gila units are the only ones I hear about in NM, and don't hear much about the other units.

Are there good "encounter/opportunity" units outside of the Gila area? I don't mind getting drawn for a unit in another part of the state if the trophy quality goes down but there is still good opportunity.

I swung for the fences last year because I was getting married and drew the only non-resident 6B tag for archery 1-14 so I can tell you the system isn't rigged, just need some luck. With that said it all depends on the type of hunt you want, I'm one for if I'm going to travel this far I want the best quality hunt I can have, but I don't mind it being rugged so I apply as such.

My buddy on the other hand just wants to go elk hunting but prefers mountainous terrain so he apply's as such. Both of our strategies make us very happy if we draw thought he might be drawing more then I do.

Just remember they only look at 1,2,3 in that order, make sure to put your hardest to draw as your first and the easier to draw (maybe it's only 3% difference) as your third.

Some great units outside of the Gila, some of which are more opportunity type hunts others that have significant trophy opportunities. Although these so called opportunities hunts are technically easier to draw than the more well known units, the NR allocation of 6% really makes drawing any tag in NM difficult. However with no points everyone has a shot. I drew a top Gila unit my first year applying. Haven't drawn since, but I apply every year.

Honestly as a resident, my 1 Gila unit i like to hunt is my 3rd choice. There's some great opportunities on the Sacramento mtns to the east and the northern units. Too many people are all over the Gila anymore, that said the Sacramentos are plenty busy too.
