Me and two other buddies applied through an outfitter this year for NM bow week 1. We gave 3 choices to increase our odds but we were unsuccessful. My question is, does applying as a group make your odds lesser than applying on your own? There are two other guys that want to apply next year to make it 5 in our group.

Usually they limit tags to a certain percent for nr. Not sure if this applies in nm or not but if I recall correctly it does. Also, not too sure on how the outfitter pool is allotted. It may be different.

Yes, in NM it limits your odds. I think 10% of the tags go to applicants applying with a guide. When your application number is drawn, there have to be enough remaining tags for everyone on your app to get one. So, if there are 4 people on the app and it gets drawn when there are only
3 tags left, no one draws for that hunt.

They then try your second and third choices and the same rules apply.

Also, the guide pool is for both residents and non residents to share, so your NR odds are low to begin with.

If I were a NR applying in NM I wouldn't put more than 2 people on the tag and in some units I would only go 1 person per app. There are better odds in the OF pool but not enough to put 5 people on an app, I believe if they draw your app and there are only 2 tags left and you have 5 people on the app your whole group will be sidelined and they will draw another app, they do not add tags to fill an app.

The info above is correct, just wanted to add that there is a limit of 4 people on one application.

You aren't sidelined for say. They go through your choices... If all three or four of your choices don't have the correct number of tags left then you didn't draw that year.

But I agree I wouldn't put 4 people.

I can't imagine a scenario that a resident would use the OF pool, the odds are better for residents to use the regular resident pool. They only included residents on the OF pool so that it looked to the legislators like it was a benefit to resident hunters which it is not, the OF pool only benefits outfitters and those NR's who can afford to use a guide, not that it is a bad thing to use a guide but it isn't really fair to the DIY NR applicant, IMO all NR's should be equal to start with in a 16% NR pool and the influence of money should come after the draw.

One could always buy LO tags, I believe over 45% of the elk tags in NM go to LO's and the rest of the tags are what is split up in the draw.

LOL I have to stop, I am making myself sick!

You are right, I didn't mean they toss your app completely, they go through all the choices.

The LO system is designed via the large Res Pool. It's a win win for the state and residents. Most Res aren't going to buy LO tags. A huge percentage of Non Res will. Guilty :)

I miss the old system but I get it. Texas draw hunts are on a level playing field for non and Res. I run into lots of non Res on draw hunts down here. Hindsight it's actually worked out in the long run for me, hunted lots of cool states from non Res I've met.

Thank you guys. Exactly what I wanted to hear. I think I will keep it to 3 guys on my app and let the other two get on their own app.

Can a NR apply with a group of R?

Yes but I would bet most residents wouldn't do that due to the higher chance of not drawing a tag. If the app was drawn and there were no tags left for the NR then the resident will not draw, even if there are tags available for residents.
