How’s it going, guys. I’m looking for some direction and hoping to get some feedback from those with more experience than me.
I was lucky enough to pull a Non‑Resident New Mexico Unit 16 antelope rifle tag, and I’m pretty fired up about it, realistically, this is probably a once‑in‑a‑lifetime tag. Because of that, I’m trying to be thoughtful about how I approach the hunt.

Here’s my dilemma. I don’t know a ton about antelope, and I’ve never hunted them before. Like everyone else, I’d love to kill a big buck if the opportunity presents itself. I’m considering hiring a guide mainly for their local knowledge and field‑judging experience, but I have no interest in staying in lodges or Airbnbs. I’ve done 10+ day bear hunts out of a tent, and archery elk hunts, have all the gear I need, and I’m completely comfortable living under the stars.

That said, I also recognize what I don’t know. I’ve never been in the unit, I know antelope are sharp‑eyed animals, and I understand there’s a learning curve. I make a good living, but I’m 27 and getting married this year, so money matters, though it’s not the biggest factor. I’d feel fine spending some money if it truly adds value, but I don’t want a “fly in, pull the trigger, fly out” experience. I want to learn, hunt hard, and actually earn it.
So, I’m curious, if you were in my shoes, what would you do? DIY and lean into the learning experience, or utilize a guide in some capacity? I’d appreciate any insight or advice. Thanks in advance.

DIY, antelope is the easiest hunt. You are throwing money away on a guide. You will know when you see a big one.
No you won't, I've been a part of 50+ goats including with 20 making all time B and C, the average guy who's never hunted them will kill the first 65-70" goat and think its a giant. There's a lot that goes into killing a big mature one.

Best advice I can give you is this. Start working on your ability to shoot out to 600 and + if possible. Get there at least 2 full scouting days in advance better if 3 days. This will be a 3 day hunt so being prepared is critical. Have a plan for game care. It is easy to lose a cape and meat if you don't have a plan. For me the DYI is as important as the trophy, but just my take. great tag and enjoy the hunt.

Get OnX , a rifle , binos and spotting scope, cooler, a pickup truck and you’re good to go.
Most antelope hunts are done by driving roads and glassing open country then plan the stalk. Just about every herd of antelope does will have a buck with them somewhere near by. After a day of getting hunted they won’t put up with much when you stop to glass if they are within about 500 yards. Congrats on the tag! a NM non res goat tag is hard to draw. Hope you have a good, successful hunt.
Also, if you plan on getting your goat mounted don’t drag him to the truck or anywhere. Quarter him up and pack him out or you’ll ruin the cape.

I drew this exact tag as a non resident in 2025. Definitely went through the same thought process you laid out.

You are going to have the opportunity to look over a ton of bucks each day and field judging will be challenging. You can get out there on your own and turn over an ok or better buck but that three day time window doesn't give you much time to figure things out on the fly.

I called up Black Horn to guide on my trip to help maximize the hunt and had a great time.

Shoot me a message if you want to talk. Happy to share what I learned last year
