I just saw a few minutes of a hunting show, Fresh Tracks, where the host and his hunting buddy are chasing elk on public land in NMex (Gila) during rifle season. They were commenting about the number of hunters in the area. Both the host and his buddy were carrying coyote brown packs and wore no orange. I guess NM has no orange requirement but is this really smart?
I guess I'm just old but carrying a pack that looks like an elk ass on public land seems like a bad idea. Since my hunting is with a bow and I have only hunted with a rifle once in the past 15 years, maybe I'm not aware this is common practice. What's the consensus out there? I can't see an orange cap scaring an elk at 200-300 yards.
