I love Kuiu gear.

I had my first real backcountry back back elk hunt last year (1 week) and I thought the gear was great and my friends were impressed with the performance compared to their gear. When I look at Kuiu, I see a great niche company that is growing at such an incredible rate. I am in manufacturing and I see how hard it would be to manage inventory with such a growth rate in this type of business. I would assume most companies that sell retail would use advance purchase orders (give me 1000 of this and this and this and 2000 of this, etc) and previous sales history of similar items for new products from their customers to accurately finance and forecast production of their products. With Kuiu growing so quickly and I am sure with the capital restrictions that any business has, they can only produce so many items until demand strips production or capacity. Their target customer is the Mountain Hunter and a lot of their products are going to people that might never be a “Mountain Hunter” in real need of this type of technical gear. However the gear is so good compared to other products and price is good compared to traditional retailers that people want it. Great for Kuiu’s employee’s and owners!

Annual discount sales (Black Friday and Christmas) are great for shedding excess inventory but they seemed to cause lingering Customer Service delivery problems. As long as they remain popular and sell direct to consumers, have long production and shipping lead times they will continue to be up against inventory shortages.

I say buy early knowing you will have to wait for a great product and will only get charged when the item ships. I purchased a custom knife before and waited a year for the guy to produce the knife. I could have purchased a nice one at Cabelas or some other retailer and walked away with it on day one but in the end I was happy I waited.

So after looking at the specs of the new 240, what is the difference from the guide coat, other than lighter? Not hating on kuiu. It is an honest question. Both are primeflex so didn't know.

I've had good results with KUIU and Sitka. Been using mainly KUIU for the last two years now, and no complaints. The gear is excellent. At this point, we all know the business model and inventory availability so I don't understand the complaint. Sure it would be nice to get everything I want right now, but see no harm in making items available for pre-order. No one is forced to pre-order, and there are other options. Many other high end camping/hunting companies make gear to order, and lead time can be anywhere from weeks to months. Although not as common in the hunting world, lots of other industries introduce products a year before they are available.

I'm not sure it qualifies as innovative, but I like the minor tweaks to each piece of gear. It does not make anything I've purchased obsolete, but adds versatility to the line-up. One of my favorite pieces of gear is the SD jacket. However, on occasion, I have thought it would be cool to have pit zips and more pockets. This year the Kenia came along with those features. Although I have no intent of ditching my SD just to pick up a Kenia (mainly because it is 4.5oz heavier), it is cool to see the gear evolve and have those options.

Most of the new items don't do much for me. I'll stick with merino over the new synthetic line. However, a 9oz rain jacket is pretty interesting. I know I can do without the pockets since I don't use them much. The lack of pit zips give me pause, but I used a Sitka Downpour Jacket for several years which weighed 3x as much and did not have pit zips. Although I don't plan to pre-order, curiosity will likely get the best of me once they are available. I did already pre-order a pair of Alpine pants a few months ago, and look forward to trying them out. I have the Attack and Guide pants, but my favorites are still the Sitka Ascent.

One positive to the limited stock/inventory is the resale value. You can just about get full value back on anything you try out and don't like.
