New Kimber 6 GT and 107 TMK report

So, following will be some photos of a new rifle put together for me by Double Broomed Mountain Rifles. I will preface this here where he can see the disclaimer. I specifically asked him not to do his normal refinishing and “prettying” up for this build. I told him the pretty won’t last long with me and I didn’t see the point in having him waste his time doing it. He has apologized to me multiple times for it being “ugly”. All I can say is, as well as I like it, it’s just as well I didn’t have him do it. I’m about to wear this thing out lol.

So, to the build. This started life as a Kimber Adirondack in 7mm-08. That rifle didn’t shoot the bullets I wanted to shoot through it worth a crap. So I pulled that barrel off and sent the action out to be rebuilt. It now wears a 1:7 twist Lilja 6mm in the Kimber 84m modified dupe contour. It’s cut at 18” and threaded 1/2” threads. I’m using my new to me this week Airlock 6.5 can. Rifle has a long ascent style titanium bolt handle. Leupold one piece backcountry rings and S&B meta 3-18 scope.

So I had a box of Hornady factory 6mm GT 109 ELD-M and some loads I did up for myself. I used Alpha brass with 40 grains of superformance under the new Sierra 107 TMK’s loaded to 2.6” coal.

I initially started on the 50 with the Hornady. Once I was centered up or thereabouts I moved over to the 100 yard range with the Hornady. A note for all, I was in a hurry as I was doing this after work and time was short. I would shoot and move the scope after each shot. What I noticed immediately was I was getting away with this. Each shot was going exactly where it should based on the dialing. I was waiting no more than a minute or two between shots. I’m going to post a picture of my target here with some notes about the shots shots you see written out. Hornady factory loads averaged right at 2800 fps on my Garmin. My hand loads averaged at 2725.

What you will see is some shots to the right and below the center of the target. That was getting on paper with the Hornady. I then dialed for 2” high and center and just switched to my hand loads. I adjusted a bit between the next 4 shots. The group to the top and right of the center are the only shots fired without adjusting between. The shots above the center are all with 107 TMK’s. Again. The group circled above and slightly to the right of center were the only ones fired intended for a group.

For being “ugly”, that’s a nice looking build. Curious to hear how the Lilja barrel shoots. I’ve heard good things about them.

So, I was busy all Saturday but wanted to take the opportunity to put some deer on the ground with these 107 TMK’s. So went out the last hour of the day and killed a couple. I wasn’t super organized with my picture taking so I may mislabel what some of these are.

Both deer were taken free handing at about 100 yards. Shot placement wasn’t optimal for either. Both deer were aware I was there and moving while spooked. So I didn’t get a chance to evaluate how it does with an “ambush” shot. Both deer ran about 50 yards. Both deer bled internally like crazy. The first deer shot had some fat plugging the exit so not a lot of external bleeding. The second deer had a massive blood puddle under it. Both deer had significant “lung blood” coming from the nose and mouth.

Again disclaimer that some of these may be mislabeled. I took pictures fast. I may be using different pictures or the same entry as entryies for both, but the exits are right.

Yeah, i wondered the same. Just because the barrel isn't painted or bead blasted?

If a smith will bead blast for $20 I'm all for it to reduce the shine cerakote is usually a waste.

MLD ranches here usually can hunt until the end of February.

Yea. Texas MLD goes to last day of February. We get 40-50 tags a year.

That's good. The Hunter only does 1/3 of the time, and never with the last round in the magazine. Hopefully AICS will help with that.
