New Jersey man's death first one to be tied to tick-related meat allergy

A previously healthy New Jersey man has been identified by an allergist at the University of Virginia (UVA) and his coauthors as suffering the first documented fatality from alpha-gal syndrome, a meat allergy triggered by tick bites. The case study was published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology in Practice yesterday.

The allergy is caused by the bite of the lone star tick, which can sensitize people to alpha-gal, a sugar found in mammalian meat, including beef, lamb, and pork.

People with alpha-gal syndrome show allergic symptoms such as rash, nausea and vomiting after eating such meat. Though deadly anaphylaxis had been considered a theoretical outcome of the allergy, it had not yet been seen until this case.

Man died last summer after eating a burger

The man's name has not been released, but he was 47 years old and did not know tick bites had trigged an allergy to meat. Last summer he became severely ill three hours after eating steak during a camping trip. Two weeks later, he was found dead after eating a hamburger at a barbecue.

The cause of death was ruled "sudden unexplained death," after an autopsy was inconclusive, but the man's wife gave the autopsy report to a doctor, who reached out to Thomas Platts-Mills, MD, PhD, the former chief of UVA Health’s Division of Asthma, Allergy and Clinical Immunology and first author of the case report.

Platts-Mills first identified alpha-gal syndrome in 2007 and is considered the foremost expert on the allergy.
In post-mortem blood samples, Platts-Mills found that the man had been sensitized to alpha-gal, and had had an extreme reaction, in line with what is seen in fatal anaphylaxis. Platts-Mills told CIDRAP news that the man's tryptase level, a marker for mast-cell activation in allergic reactions, was 2,000 milligrams per milliliter. The highest tryptase level he had previously seen was 90.

'Chigger bites' likely from lone star larvae

Platts-Mills said the man's wife reported he did not have recent tick bites, but had 12 or 13 chigger bites around his ankles the summer he became ill. Platts-Mills said many "chigger bites" in the Eastern United States are actually bites from lone star tick larvae.

"It is important that both doctors and patients who live in an area of the country where lone star ticks are common should be aware of the risk of sensitization," Platts-Mills said in a UVA press release. "More specifically, if they have unexpected episodes of severe abdominal pain occurring several hours after eating mammalian meat, they should be investigated for possible sensitization to the oligosaccharide alpha-gal."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates nearly 450,000 people may be affected in the United States. The number could be higher, as some people will have only mild symptoms, and, unlike most allergies, reactions are delayed and only appear hours after eating meat.

Platts-Mills said that most cases of alpha-gal syndrome are still diagnosed on the East Coast, but the tick has been identified as far inland as Indiana, and he expects further spread.

One of my grooming clients has been diagnosed with Alpha Gal. (Middle TN)
I always thought it presented as an allergy to eating red meat, however, this poor old girl is having to rehome her dog. She's simultaneously developed a servere allergy to her little terrier (not sure whether it's the hair, skin or what) and her husband can no longer cook meat in the house without her having an adverse reaction! 😳

I have a friend that was diagnosed with AG. He can eat red meat again after some sort of acupuncture treatment. The acupuncture treatment has become pretty popular in west TN and west KY.

There are always rumors that Lyme disease and other tick born illnesses were made in pharmaceutical labs. Pfizer just rolled out a Lyme disease product and tick counts are at an all time high

Can you expand on the Pfizer Lyme tick disease product?

Found it….

Overview

Pfizer and Valneva’s Lyme disease vaccine candidate, VLA15, showed over 70% efficacy in late-stage trials (2026), with plans to seek regulatory approval despite narrowly missing a key statistical goal due to low infection rates. The four-dose vaccine targets the OspA protein to prevent tick-to-human transmission, aiming for potential launch in late 2027

Folks, please consider using permethrin as a preventive to keep ticks off your clothes. I just returned from my fifth day of bear hunting and I have yet to find a tick on me. Before I started diligently treating my hunting clothes and pack with permethrin a few years ago, I had days that I would remove more than 50 ticks from me and my gear. We had an immunocompromised neighbor who died in his early 50's from a tickborne illness and that was my wakeup call (although I always hated them crawling on me). For your health and the health of your loved ones, consider it.

What’s your treatment method?

These are baseless ridiculous conspiracy theories.

Lyme disease likely came from Eurasia and is present in preserved historical ticks long before the US military ever even considered research on ticks.

The fact that it's called Lyme Diease after Lyme CT, 1st out break in the 70s, which just north of Plumb Island means nothing to you?
I don't think it was invented on Plumb Island but research to enhance existing pathogens for defense purposes still goes on today, as we all found out a couple years ago.
We straped bombs to bats during WWII, project X Ray, during testing they roosted under a fuel truck and burnt the Army testing facility down. Why wouldn't we have tried to manipulate a tick diease during the same time period? Plumb Island opened up when '54/'55?

Vaccine 70% effective on the Alpha Gal, 100 percent effective at destroying your liver and has 700 side effects!

What’s your treatment method?
There are various clothing treatments that can be used. I've never tried the clothes soaking method, which is to essentially make a .5% concentration of permethrin and soak you clothes in it, wring them out and then hang them to let them fully dry. I do not use this method because I'm not a fan of having the insecticide against my skin for potential dermal absorption.

I hang my clothes outside and spray them liberally (to the point they are obviously wet) with a .5% concentration of permethrin and then let them dry for a day before I wear them. Be aware that you have to track timing of application because it is only viable for about six weeks.

Seriously, this is one of the best improvements I have made in hunting and outdoor strategy in the last ten years.

EDIT: BE AWARE THAT PERMETHIN HAS A VERY STRONG CHEMICAL ODOR!
