I'm confused by Garmin's new plans.. What's the best (cheapest) option for someone that only uses it for 1 trip (a week) a year? Pay the $40 annual activation fee for a "consumer" plan and then pick whichever level I think I need for that (enabled, essential, etc)?

Then do I have to cancel my plan before next year if I'm not going to use it again within 12 months? Or is the annual activation just a 1-time deal?

And from what I understand, there are no longer preset messages to preset recipients that don't count against your message count?

Yes, annual activation fee is $40 then plus the plan. I just used mine in Alaska for 2 weeks. Cost about $90 for unlimited plan. Deactivated when i got back. Will have to do it again next year. I used to get cheaper monthly plan but would always go over and end up costing about the same.
