New Hunter Newer User from CO

Hello,

My name is Ryan and I have been stumbling around on Rokslide for some time now. I started archery hunting about 5 years ago and have been fairly successful but could use some help. When I started hunting elk I was going to a friends hunting spot and using a tree stand. Unfortunately this year I need to find a new place to hunt. I did some research and want to try out GMU 11 but don't really know how to get started on picking an area for scouting.

Hey Ryan, welcome to the forum. You may check out the Gritty Bowmen podcast that got posted a couple days ago with Corey Jacobson of Elk101. They talk a little about virtual scouting, but if I were to sum it up it would be the following:

Elk need 3 things: food, water and bedding. Look for areas that have all 3 in descent proximity and you will have a place to start. Bedding: north facing slopes with thick undergrowth and/or brush are a good place to start; they are just looking for someplace to stay cool and feel safe.

With you being in CO you might be within 2-3hrs of where you plan to hunt if so spend a weekend out in the area. Scout it on foot if you can but like what was said earlier scout the area via your PC and maps first.

I'm still a newbie but I've spent hrs on google earth (bing maps) looking at the area I wanted to hunt and even did a couple trips out in the summer to hike it. I was also able to scout the peaks via spotter locating elk which was inviting. Good luck on your quest/research.

Welcome aboard, getting out doing some scouting is going to help. I think Im going to plant some cams out in the area I plan to hunt myself soon.

Great unit with heaps of elk. Where in CO you living?
