my baby brother ( almost 30) much to my excitement has expressed an interest in hunting. He of course has a couple AR's he is quite proficient with and seems interested in either going after feral pigs or coyotes.
We come from a pretty staunch anti gun anti hunting family, so when I took up the journey of becoming a teenaged hunter I did so entirely on my own and mostly by myself, so the prospect of helping him get started is pretty thrilling to me.

At first I thought about taking him to some ranch or another where your success is pretty much promised. Not something I would ever do by myself, but for a newbie's first kill it seemed like a fine idea. then I started thinking about the difference between hunting and killing and how I would go years between punched tags which made success that much sweeter.
I kind of feel like if we were going to go to one of these places I would have to explain before hand how this experience falls somewhere between hunting and grocery shopping, which would potentially cheapen the experience for him or in someway be misleading.
But the greedy part of me that wants to get him obsessed knows that one gimme kill can go a long way toward making a lifelong hunter out of someone. plus there is the meat he would get to take home and enjoy for months to come.

hiring a guide for a truly wild pig hunt in california - which would be my preference- is financially out of the question at the moment.

on the flip side there is coyote hunting, which is definitely hunting, but you don't usually keep the meat and I'm not sure if that is paradox a brand new hunter should digest right away for their first kill.

any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated

Doe antelope in Wyoming. It's a cheap tag a target rich environment and a out of state adventure you can do with a long three day weekend.
