New Hornady ELD-X

I can't speak to the RL line of powders, but I've been shooting the 200's with a 300 WSM seated at 3.16"(way over SAAMI). My load is 68.5 grains of H4831SC and I'm getting 2830 fps out of a 24" barrel and .25 MOA.

With this load, I've shot a black bear, blacktail deer, coyote, and two whitetails. The blacktail might have taken a couple of steps, but everything else just fell over. This bullet is super accurate, but a bit more explosive than I had hoped for. I wish it held together better.

It'll be a few months before I get out to work on load development, but I'm looking to try some RL 26 and the 143 ELD X in my 6.5 saum and 284 Win with the 162. I should have the 300 WSM together some time after that, so I'm brainstorming load development; maybe the 178 ELD X or 175 Barnes LRX? I'd love to try the 200 but I'd like a little more velocity then I think I'll get with that heavy of a bullet. I've been a Barnes and Nosler AB guy mostly. I've tried the Berger bullets but am not crazy about them. The ELD X interests me and I think I'll give them a try, but Ive learned that I'm not really a fan of grenading bullets....

If you end up not liking the X you may want to try the M. From what I have seen and read I think they may end up expanding less than the X due to the tip cavity being just a bit larger than the M. The A-max's are about as good of a performing bullet as you can get for an all distances type bullet. The ELD M bullet should be the same.

Copy. I've read where people have used the ELD M similar to how people used the amax and Berger hybrids. I like the weights of some of the M bullets too. I'll look into those more. Thanks.

The ELD-M is almost a 1 to 1 swap with like AMAXs- just a different tip. They kill great as long as one goes towards the heavy side.


They however are NOT "tougher" than like weight ELD-Xs.

Hornady is introducing a 7mm 180 gr ELD-M in the spring. That should be the trick for stretching out the Amax.

I have a 270wsm that I was planning on shooting the 130 Berger Classic hunters in. They have a great BC for a 130 gr. I was thinking a really flat shooting cartridge. Then Hornady released these 145 ELD-X's. Now I am seriously contemplating scraping the 130's and working up a load with the 145 ELD-X's. Any thoughts on this?

if you were planning on shooting 130s i would would have went with a regular 270win. the wsm is really going to show its advantage over the 270win when using heavier bullets. Im going to run the 145s in my wifes tikka 270 also. should be a good combo for you as well!
