Hey all,

I'm one of those east coast flat landers that hangs on the every word of your hunt reports. The fiancé and I are currently exploring different areas of the west deciding where to relocate when our contracts are up. That being said, I am looking to do some black bear hunting this fall in the white mountain region of New Hampshire. I tried a combo hunt (deer/bear) last year in November but was not successful. This year I am looking to focus just on bears and I'm planning to go earlier in Sept.

Have any of you hunted that area? Any suggestions for what I should Key in on to get my first bear? The biologist I spoke with said there should still be berries around but that the Bears will likely be switching to harder mast like beech nuts by then. Does that sound right? I think I'll have 5 days to camp and hunt.

Thanks much and any advice is appreciated.

Pat

Wish I could help, I've been thinking about bear hunting myself, and I'm only about an hour - hour and a half from the white mountains. (Missed my chance at my first bear in PA last year because I didn't buy the damn tag...) Best I could recommend might be a couple camping / fishing spots.

I'm assuming this is all ambush / still hunting? I don't know NH regs, but that's not enough time to set up a bait station. Tough part is that it's still pretty damn hot and muggy in September and most of the leaves haven't even started to turn yet, so still very thick.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

If you want to send a PM to me with your phone number and/or your email address, I can probably point you in the right direction. During the last ten years I've been driving up I-93 to the White Mountains and checking out the bears up there. It takes me about three hours to get into good bear country when driving that route. Last year (2015) I found a huge bear while I was up there -- biggest black bear that I've ever seen in New England. I'll be up there again, this year (2016). Anyway, let me know and we'll go from there.
