New Guy in South Carolina

Just wanted to post up here and introduce myself. I joined years ago mainly because search results for various subjects always lead me to threads here. I have greatly benefited from the information I have gained reading through various threads and I figure I should contribute to repay that in whatever way I can.

I grew up shooting and hunting but really leaned into shooting more as the years went on. My main focus has been competitive long range shooting. Team style sniper matches such as Mammoth Sniper Challenge have been the focus of my free time and training. I am to the point now where I miss hunting and I am getting back into it. I will be hunting public land here in South Carolina. I'm hoping to possibly get out west and shoot an elk in the next 4-5 years but for now whitetail will be my main focus. I plan on mostly going after them with a bow. I am running a hoyt ventum 33. I have a few pieces of gear I still need to pick up. I plan on using my fitness to my advantage and hiking in to the most remote areas of public land to get to the least pressured bucks. Given the logistics of this, some type of saddle setup is probably going to be best.

I look forward to sharing my success and hopefully providing some useful information to the community.

If hunting around the swamps rubber or neoprene knee boots. The upper part of the state whatever is comfortable considering there’s no real hiking like out west.

I am hunting the upstate area and in particular game zone 1 and do not deal with swamp or water much. This area of the state is as mountainous as it gets for SC and can provide some pretty strenuous outings with a good bit of elevation change. Nothing like out west but its elevation change and relative remoteness nonetheless. I may have a stream crossing but I can usually do so at a location I can rock hop and stay dry.

What boots do you wear for hunting in South Carolina?

My approach to boots is usually a non-insulated well draining rucking type boot. It's what I've spent most of my pack loaded miles in and I know how my feet perform in these in all conditions. I can rotate a few pairs of darn toughs in the event of wet feet.

My current choice for this is Salomon Jungle ultras. They don't have long term durability like some others out there but they fit my feet incredibly well and are somewhat cheap. I have also had some Salomon quest 4d gtx and they also do pretty well if I know ill be getting wet. Again the durability long term sucks, but the fit is great so ill try to pick up a pair on sale when I find them. I would definitely like to try some different boots but just haven't really gotten there yet.
