New guy from Germany

Hello everyone,

German guy joining the forum here.

Not much to say about myself: I'm 30 years old and started hunting and shooting as soon as I was old enough. I do a bit of reloading and have my first own hunting dog for almost one year now.
When it comes to fishing, I'm absolutely inexperienced. It's probably a good thing that we have two small trout ponds where the fish can't escape!

Over the years, I've visited the forum from time to time to research gear and read hunting reports.
So why am I joining now?

I was planning to organize another DIY hunt in New Zealand, like I did in my early twenties. Then I thought, why not North America instead? It saves some flight time, offers even more remote wilderness, and I've heard that in at least some U.S. states it's possible to hunt big game on your own, even as a foreigner.

My main questions at the moment are which state to choose and where I could donate venison if I'm successful. I was thinking that maybe churches or other organizations have programs that provide game meat to people in need.

I guess I'll be starting a separate thread soon with a few more questions—hopefully not too many stupid ones.

P.S. I would suggest hunting for elk in one of the western states like AZ, CO, WY, NM or UT. Or maybe moose in ME or eastern Canada? If elk in AZ suites your fancy, HERE is a link to get you started. And good hunting back at you as long as you don't hunt the same AZ units I do.
