So, I've been eyeballing some different options for a new coat for a while. I don't have a ton of extra cash (three girls), so I need it to serve multiple functions. I want to be able to use this for alpine skiing, mountain climbing, steelhead fishing, and as a general use hunting coat (primarily archery).

I have a pretty decent layer system that includes wool, Sitka Traverse shirt, a Sitka Celsius vest, a North Face primaloft coat.

Would I be better off investing in a good quality hard shell jacket of some sort? Any recommendations?

Yep sounds like you need a good waterproof breathable shell. Lots of quality options out there. I have a mtn hardware 3 layer goretex that I use for everything and it's been bomb proof. It works just as well now as it did when I got it 4 years ago.

I read a lot of jacket reviews but then I decided to choose the Woolrich Men's Classic Hunt Coat.
Very good design, pleasant and warm material.
The buttons, weight, and height of the jacket were exactly what I was looking for.
I like the large collar that this jacket has. When turned up, it’s big and it covers all of your neck from the wind, rain, and snow. Combine it with a winter hat and you have your best winter hunting combination.
The wool is natural and thick and while the jacket is pretty heavy and it’s still easy to move in.
I loved its soft cotton twill; it runs through the entire jacket, even the sleeves, and it was a surprisingly good feature. You can read more about it in this review:http://huntingfishingplus.com/best-wool-hunting-jackets/
In my state, we sometimes get temperatures as low as -25 and this jacket keeps me warm even on the coldest days so I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a winter season hunting jacket.
